Meet Anthony Khattar of Anthony’s Shoe Repair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Khattar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Anthony. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Illinois where my father Fred operated his own shop. As I was growing up I would hang in the store with him from time to time and watch him work and help with customers.

After high school when I was in college I started working with him more and more and start to take the business more serious … that’s when I fell in love with the business. I Remember my father telling me “when I’m at home I am your father at work I’m your boss.” Haha!

I eventually open a second location (1986) back home in Illinois and ran that location before I move to San Diego in 1989. My older brother Ray owned an Italian restaurant back home and decided to take over my location that I opened… keep in the family!

I open my first location in Solana beach California in 1989 then I branched out and opened a second location in Carmel Mountain Ranch and 1992 and then eventually Opened my third location in Delmar Heights in 2002 with 10 employees total. I always tell my customers the shoe business, it’s in my DNA! Haha!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business it takes some time to build your customer base.

My father taught me to go above and beyond in your craftsmanship and the customers will come back 10 fold.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I was happy go lucky kid & prankster. I loved to make people laugh.

Besides playing sports in the neighborhood … I always had entrepreneurial spirit.

For instance, I would go door to door selling flowers and vegetable seeds to earn points to purchase things from their catalog I would probably around 10 years old.

In grade school, we had a contest/fundraiser selling grapefruit and oranges by the case from Texas & I was number one seller in seventh and eighth grade!

I started my first official job at the age of 14 working at my uncle’s restaurant $3.50 per hour. I was so excited.
