Meet Arvin Abadilla of Eli & Ali Baby in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arvin Abadilla.

Arvin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am Arvin, the founder of Eli & Ali Baby and inventor of the Tush Swiper Diaper Rash Cream Applicator.

I (Arvin) started my career in as a product designer in Boston designing for other other brands (Phillips, Jarden, Genentech, In 2013, I got married, moved out to Encinitas, fell in love with storytelling, and OpenGlass Studio was born. Under OpenGlass, I supported product design teams, invention startups, and landed side work as a wedding videographer. Over the next few years, I worked my way into corporate videography and the business became 50/50 design & video.

Then… I had 2 kids, which was an instant exercise in life prioritization. All of a sudden, time became scarce and even more precious. In short – I wanted to shift away from trading my time for money, and towards building a business. How could I do that with my current knowledge and skillsets? I embraced that my life IS kids (at least for the time being) and I began taking tabs on all the baby products that annoyed me. Eventually, I realized that changing diapers from the ages of 0-2 was a huge deal and a big time suck, so I broke down the process of changing a diaper and found that applying diaper cream with bare fingers was really inconvenient. I knew I had to streamline this process, so I started 3D printing prototypes and eventually created what is now called the Tush Swiper.

This is just the first offering in the product family with a few more innovations planned, so I created the brand “Eli & Ali Baby” named after my kids. Luckily, I was able to draw from my background in design along with my experience in the video to design, engineer, market the product with animations and promo videos. It’s been a crazy ride and (although there’s so much work ahead of me) I’ve learned so much about what it takes to launch a brand & product from scratch. We launched the Tush Swiper a couple of weeks ago with direct website sales and will be scaling up and rolling out on next month!

So there you have it, That’s how I went from designing products to discovering videography and coming full circle to create a baby brand and manufacture my own products.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road looks smooth when zoomed way out, but there are so many course corrections along the way. What I’ve learned is that its OK to foster new interests as long as I’m mindful of the possibilities that it opens up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Eli & Ali Baby – what should we know?
OpenGlass Studio is simply a vehicle for creative output. It started out as a company for me to do freelance product design, then freelance video, and now is a manufacturer/parent company of my baby brand “Eli & Ali Baby”.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
An openness to the possibility of failure.
