Meet Ashley Armstrong of Marching Mutt in central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Armstrong.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started walking dogs for a woman who owned a pet care business in 2017. Months later, she told me that she was relocating back to Seattle, and wanted to sell her client list to me and help me set up a business of my own, saying she didn’t want to leave her clients in anyone’s hands but mine.

I had become so emotionally attached to all of the dogs I was helping care for, so I gladly accepted her offer. I started my business and started marketing myself as someone who is willing and able to help with dogs with behavioral issues, and the often misunderstood “bully breed” dogs as I have fostered rescue dogs, many of whom have been pit bulls for the past five years and have experience in behavior management and positive reinforcement training.

Within a year of starting Marching Mutt, with no marketing aside from referrals and word of mouth, I tripled my clientele, and have recently expanded hiring on two more team members. I have some of the most amazing client’s anyone can hope for and as far as I’m concerned, have the best job in the world. I get to play with dogs all day!

I am a huge rescue advocate and believe that more people would be willing to do so if they knew they had trustworthy, reliable help to care for their furry family members. I am incredibly thankful to all of my clients, past present and future, for supporting this endeavor of mine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m fortunate to say that for me the road has been smooth. I believe as long as you are trustworthy and reliable, and you do your job with integrity and respect, you will see the benefits. I treat all of the animals in my care as I would treat my own, and people appreciate that. My business has very quickly benefitted from that.

Please tell us about Marching Mutt.
Marching Mutt is a dog walking/pet care business serving neighborhoods throughout central San Diego. We offer dog walking, pet sitting, and cat care services. We offer services to people with dogs, mainly rescues, with behavioral issues that maybe other businesses wouldn’t feel comfortable or want to bother with putting in the extra care to help with.

I take great pride in being able to say that we acknowledge all of our client’s pets as individuals and care for them accordingly. Whether the dog may be shy/ fearful, or dog reactive, we know that nobody is perfect and sometimes a little bit of patience and compassion can go a long way.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing soccer on the backyard with my dog Ollie. He was a blue heeler, incredibly work driven and would push the ball around with his nose. I remember setting up a goal net that my brothers and I used to play roller hockey and standing behind it with treats, trying to train him to make goals.
