Meet Marci Bair of Bair Financial Planning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Bair.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marci. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a San Diego native, and I started my Financial Planning Firm when I was 25. I have now been in practice for over 25 years. My wife and I have been together for over 34 years, and we have two sons. One recently graduated from USD, and the other is a Junior on a Football scholarship at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. We have been very fortunate to grow primarily through referrals from our clients and other professionals such as CPA’s and attorneys.

About 14 years ago, I hired an intern from San Diego State University that turned out to be the best hire I have ever made. Victor Orozco came to me as a college student that worked for me until he graduated and then came on fulltime. He has proven himself to be a very valuable asset to the Firm and is now the Director of Operations for Bair Financial Planning.

We are affiliated with The Wealth Consulting Group that has 22 offices around the country. This affiliation gives us additional national support while being a boutique Wealth Management Firm. While we do have clients around the country, most of our clients are in San Diego.

The majority of our clients seek us out to help them with their Retirement Planning and Wealth Management. The main question we answer for clients is to help them what age can they retire and then we provide professional investment management of their retirement and non-retirement investment accounts.

Our clients are primarily LGBT couples, female executives and progressive business owners that are getting ready to retire or sell their business. I was a former baseball & basketball coach, and I currently play in a weekly women’s Basketball league at the Mission Valley YMCA, and during football season my wife & I are on the road watching our son play football for Cal Poly.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a business owner, there are always curve balls that get thrown your way. In addition, being in Financial Planning, I have had to deal with several stock market crashes, a housing crisis, financial recession and a major overhaul of the health insurance system and numerous regulatory changes.

Through thick and thin I have been able to hang on and provide our clients with a high level of service which is why I feel we have been able to survive through the financially turbulent times and still be a thriving business today. I have had challenges with employees from time to time, but for the most part, we have always had a good team that is hard working and loves to service our clients.

I am sure we will experience more challenges in the future, but we will weather them as well and continue to serve our clients. We are blessed that we have great clients and have had the privilege to work with many of them for over 25 years.

I am a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and we are a Wealth Management Firm.

We are known for specializing in helping clients with their Retirement Planning and Investment Management. We create personal financial plans for our clients that allow them to become financially organized and answer all of their financial planning questions. Some of the more popular questions we get are, “When can I retire,” or “Should I pay off my home quicker,” or “How should I invest my money.”

What sets aside from many financial advisors is that we specialize in Sustainable & Socially Responsible Investing. This allows clients to align their values with their investments and not invest in companies or industries that they don’t believe in or support.

What makes me most proud about our company is that we have high ethics and always put the client first in any decision we make. If it does not benefit our client, we don’t do it. I am proud that we still have clients working with us from the first day I opened my business over 25 years ago. Our clients are like family, and we treat them that way.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My dad is a role model for me. He showed me what hard work looked like and taught me the value of networking.

My wife has also been a huge supporter. She has worked in the business over the years when we needed extra help, and she has been the rock in taking care of our kids at home when they were little so that I could concentrate on serving our clients and running the Financial Planning practice.

I am also very fortunate to be able to surround myself with some of the best industry leaders and community leaders that I can learn and grow from professionally, but also as a good community member and supporter of local non-profits and important causes.
