Meet Barbara Powels Bowen of Photosbybarbara.org in Mira Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Powels Bowen.

Barbara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had the desire to capture a moment in time. As a high school student I took photography, my instructor was a very gentle man name Mr. Quick. He placed in my heart that capturing a moment is like capturing ones soul. Once the opportunity is gone it will never be repeated exactly the same again.

I purchased my first camera at the age of 16, I was so into capturing that moment I never went anywhere without my camera. I would take photos and gift them to friends and family members. Whenever anyone wanted a photo of one who had passed this life; I had built the reputation of photographer that others would always come to me for photos they required.

I was 16 when I took wedding photos for my sister for her special day. Photos of family reunions, church events and to fast forward my father’s internment. I love looking back on times past and enjoy blessing others when they look back on their special events. So here I am today still snapping and take pride in what I capture.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggle is that friends and family expect my time to be free to photograph their events as well as weddings. I have photographed countless weddings and the expectation of these members are that I am gifting my time. As I have started drawing the line in the sand some have notably protested.

Moving forward I present my contract to all who inquire about my service. I also found it to be beneficial to publicize my fees and contract on my website: photosbybarbara.org.

Photosbybarbara.org – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Photosbybarbara.org is a Christian base company. I am my churches photographer which I freely do their church service photos as well as post them on Facebook as a form of advertisement. For church events I now charge a discounted fee and have experienced some disappointments from some.

I specialize in wedding and engagement photos, special events, and funeral services. I have also taken family photos as well as portraits, I really enjoy shooting weddings and giving the bride the best when she reflects back on her special day.

My most proud moments are when my clients look at their photos and are amazed. That gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. The end results that I present to my clients set me apart from other photographers by pricing, flexibility and the packages that are offered.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Satisfying my customers.
