Meet Barbara Richardson of Children of Life Preschool Academy in Chula Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Richardson.

Barbara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a retired Banker of 22 years. I had reached my peak within the industry and I had decided I would dedicate my time towards the Ministry my husband and I started in 2008. During that time as I was in submission of The Lord, the Lord directed me to open a preschool. I’ve always had a desire to work with children/teenagers and was a mentor to many. Lack of my own understanding I could never figure out why children including those familiar or strangers always showed unconditional love towards me.

Being obedient to God’s calling, I opened Children of Life Academy five years later.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part yes it has been smooth because of the children’s lives we have made a huge impact in their lives. However, on the other end of the spectrum employee turnover and Child Care licensing issues has been our only struggle. But we continued to overcome all challenges and have become much more careful and better, it was a huge learning curve for us. With our parents support and seeing the development growth of our children, that alone takes precedent over the struggles.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Children of Life Academy is a place where children ages 2 to 5 can be kids while at the same time receives structure throughout the entire day. We offer a fun, safe, and nurturing Christian based atmosphere. Our approach on teaching is fresh, innovative and interactive no matter what type of learner the child is, their needs are met in an exciting way. We believe in maximizing a child’s opportunity to learn and grow using a faith-based curriculum, which includes reading, writing, math, social skills, emotional skills, mannerism and Christianity. Our goal is to build a solid foundation for each child’s future success in education and when they leave our school they are Kindergarten ready!

We have established a well-rounded program to develop children who possess characteristics of love, self-worth and integrity. Their daily learning includes bible lessons and understanding the importance of sharing, showing respect, honesty, and virtue.

We are a family-oriented Academy that provides World Class service to all families.

What were you like growing up?
From what I was told and what I recall, I was a very loving person who always cared about others. Outgoing, creative, fun, energetic, focus driven, silly, clumsy and emotionally sensitive. Loved to be challenged and being the best I could be throughout my childhood. Of course, as I became a teenager and young adult I was very eager and ambitious to learn and be successful in life. I loved to do girly things and didn’t like to get dirty and am the same way today, I definitely was not a ‘tomboy’ like my sisters.
