Meet Barbara Rinaldo of San Diego Danceworks in North Clairemont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Rinaldo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 1990 I became the Director of San Diego Danceworks. Prior to becoming director, I had been teaching in a variety of educational settings: dance studios, recreational centers, community colleges, public schools, and universities. When I moved to San Diego I had been teaching at Danceworks for a year when the Director asked me to take over. Owning a dance studio is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Danceworks reflects my background in ballet and modern dance as well as my professional career as a dancer and a choreographer.
The teachers at Danceworks are dedicated dance artists with professional careers in performing, choreography, coaching, and education. We offer both a recreational program and a competitive program. We believe that dance as an art form develops the whole person. Our teachers are compassionate and knowledgeable, respecting individual body types and developmental needs. The rigorous physical training we offer is carefully planned and appropriate to the age and skill level of our students. We encourage creativity and expression of feelings, giving students a confidence in their ability to think for themselves and bring their ideas into actions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been struggles as one would expect in a highly competitive field. There are many dance studios but our persistence comes from our belief in what we have to offer and we appreciate the support from the community for our approach and our programs.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about San Diego Danceworks – what should we know?
We offer dance classes in a variety of styles: acrobatics, gymnastics, ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, jazz funk, hip hop, contemporary, modern dance, lyrical, caregiver and me, tap/ballet and ballet/creative for children, conditioning, floor barre, turns and leaps, improv/choreography and private and duo lessons. We have a well-balanced dance studio with a strong recreational program and an award winning competitive program. Our ballet and pointe programs offer excellent training with a focus on alignment and correct use of the body and we believe that all body types can train in ballet. Our children’s program is a unique blend of teaching the fundamentals and developing creativity. We support and encourage our student’s choreographic aspirations and provide performance opportunities to them. Our Acrobatics program has three levels and two coaches to develop skills from beginning level to advanced.
San Diego Danceworks is a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, an honor society created by the National Dance Education Organization. NHSDA strives to recognize middle school and high school students who have demonstrated outstanding artistic merit, leadership and academic achievement.

What sets us apart from the other studios is the versatility of our program and our teachers and our passion for dance education for all ages.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I love dance in all of its forms. I am passionate about teaching and curious about how we learn. If I’m not teaching or dancing I’m constantly working to improve the business. I am always open to feedback that will improve our customer satisfaction. We work to create an environment that is positive and supportive and supports families and the community.
