Meet Barry Brunye of Dudley’s Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to BARRY BRUNYE.

BARRY, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our family acquired Dudley’s Bakery in 2007 after years of neglect. We realized it is a San Diego icon and was worth updating and preserving for future generations, after all people have been visiting here for over 50 years.

We set out to modernize the facility while preserving the recipes, the wholesome ingredients, and the valued personnel. We started with a new roof, new equipment, and a total clean up to restore the bakery to its former glory and the public has responded accordingly.

Offer premium quality at affordable prices while creating a welcome atmosphere, was and is our goal.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Dudley’s Bakery is located in the remote Northeast foot hill area of San Diego County at the intersection of 2 major highways. Being remote means having to always have an adequate inventory for running out for supplies is not an option, having reliable, talented personnel to ensure premium product goes without saying, and keeping a 50+ year old building up to all the applicable codes are the 3 main challenges we face.

Obstacles include overcoming rumors about our closing, finding talented personnel, and getting our products to market in a quick, cost effective way.

Dudley’s Bakery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dudley’s Bakery is a San Diego icon with great consumer awareness and an excellent reputation. We were founded in 1963, and have multi-generational customers who love to tell us their own personal Dudley’s stories of when they were kids coming with their grandparents, parents, uncles, etc.

We are constantly hosting motorcycle groups, car clubs, civic groups, etc. who use Dudley’s as a desirable stop on their travels.

Although the primary emphasis is our retail operation here in Santa Ysabel, we do offer our baked goods at wholesale rates to grocers and restaurants throughout San Diego County and up as far north as Thousand Oaks. We also have a very popular Fundraising Program in which we supply our baked goods at discount to churches, civic groups, clubs, schools, etc. for their fundraising programs. The high name recognition of Dudley’s when combined with affordable product that everyone enjoys, sure beats the heck out of pushing wrapping paper or frozen cookies. 🙂

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The purchase of Dudley’s was a turnaround effort and our customers have responded very favorably. Sales are up, employee count is up, we have developed new and exciting products, while sticking to our roots of offering quality product, affordably priced in a safe, clean friendly environment. We offer the best in Julian Apple Pies (over 8 varieties), over 27 types of delicious breads, and full displays of fresh baked pastries.

In addition, we have a very popular gift shop offering exceptional pricing on fine silver jewelry of all types, unique and fun collectables, area books and educational materials, and Native American crafts. We are proud of our history, work hard in the present, and look forward to a long and healthy future supplying the greater San Diego area. Stop in and say hello next time in our area.
