Meet Dane Drobny of Barry’s Bootcamp in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dane Drobny.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a client. Coming every single day, sometimes two times a day. I loved the actual workout itself, the community and the brand. The manager at the time approached me about becoming a trainer. I had very little experience at the time but gave it a shot. Fell in love with the process and the rest is history. Fast forward 7 years and I am now the Area Manager for our San Diego Region and my number one focus is doing whatever it takes to open a second location at One Paseo in North County.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There will always be challenges, in everything we do. If there weren’t, I don’t think we are pushing ourselves far enough. Life is all about how we handle setbacks. Learning to not take things personally, letting go of ego, and considering the other perspective has helped me always find a common ground. Persistence will always prevail. There would not be ups without downs. Success is usually 1 single step beyond your most recent failure. Trust the process. It’s not over until you decide. The world will keep turning, do not dwell on something negative that is already in the past.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Barry’s Bootcamp story. Tell us more about the business.
We were founded in 1998. We are known for being the pioneers of boutique fitness. There was no platform for it back then. Without reinventing the wheel or the workout itself, our brand has evolved over the years into a luxury lifestyle company. Our workout is 50% cardiovascular and 50% strength training. HIIT training on a treadmill to torch fat, and resistance training to build lean muscle. We are most proud of the growth we have accomplished while staying true to our people and our roots. What sets us apart from others is our clients. The workout is challenging, but we are all in this together.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
You create your own luck. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Your attitude will directly reflect your luck and it is totally up to you to dwell on the past or use what you’ve learned for the future.
