Meet Benjamin Cruz of Vision Carpet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Cruz.

Hi Benjamin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born on August 27, 1998. I am the owner and main flooring installer for my company “Vision Carpet.” I started working in this field at a very young age of about seven. At the time, it was just following my dad along, handing him tools, etc. as I got older, he started letting me do more, and eventually, out of high school, we worked together for a flooring company in San Diego. Per California law, I needed four years of “legal” experience in the field in order to get my c-15 license. I enjoyed my job a lot but four years as a high school graduate seems so far away. Countless times I wanted to quit and find a new job, I even attended college for a year to pursue a career in computer programming.

I quickly realized how much I loved working with my hands and how anxious I would get at the thought of working behind a screen for the rest of my life. I decided to go at it full throttle, learning as much as I possibly could and I finally got to the 4-year mark. I was very scared to go for it, I felt like my skills wouldn’t be good enough but my lovely fiancé Yareth was a big help along the way and I went for it. I managed to pass the test the first time, both trade and law and was able to finally have my own business in a trade that was passed down to me by my dad, it was a very sentimental moment for me when I was told I passed. Now I’ve been able to work for myself and be my own boss, have my own schedule it’s very liberating! My portfolio is growing, I love posting my work on social media, preferably on Instagram @visioncarpet.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was going pretty smooth, I started getting a good feel for the field, learning the do’s and don’ts, building up my clientele. I had no issues at all I had the support of my friends and family, most importantly my fiancé, but one night while driving home, I was hit by a drunk driver, my car flipped three times and hit a hill and I landed in a ditch on the side of the freeway. It resulted in my truck being completely totaled, I had to take time off and start from square one again. I couldn’t move as easily anymore; walking, standing, even sitting became painful. Had to start physical therapy and had to learn the importance of putting my health first. Even today, I have to deal with those injuries. Thankfully I came out alive, with no broken bones, just bruised ribs and terrible back pain. It’s been rough but it only taught me that life isn’t always smooth, and no matter what happens, we always have to move forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Vision Carpet?
Vision Carpet is a flooring company based in San Diego; our motto is “making your flooring dreams a reality.” We specialize in the installations of carpet, vinyl goods, laminates, and waterproof click floorings. Our mission is to make the purchase and installation of your new flooring as easy and as professional as possible while also keeping it affordable. When you enter a typical “big box” flooring store, you don’t get the one-on-one attention that you will get with us. I like giving my clients a breakdown of how the project will commence and constantly give updates. I personally go to my client’s houses, apartments, or condos, to give them samples, and get a feel of their subfloors, and help with ideas and designs that will help bring their vision to life. Seeing all this beforehand, rather than on the day of installation, makes the process much easier for me and for my clients.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, first impressions are very important, which is why I like to keep my distance and make sure my clients know I care about their health. Taking this type of action not only shows how serious we take covid but also how much our client’s safety means to us.
