Meet Benjamin Halcewicz of Krav Maga Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Halcewicz.

Benjamin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a martial arts family and developed a passion for all forms of martial arts as a very young child. I have been training in Karate for over 35yrs and hold a 3rd Degree Black Belt. I have been training in Krav Maga for over 20 yrs and have been a certified instructor for over 15 yrs. With the opportunity to follow my dream of continuing to develop my own skills while teaching and sharing my knowledge with others, I opened my own program a little over 2 yrs ago and now my program has grown to be one of the premier Krav Maga programs in North County.

I firmly believe in a healthy work life balance, and outside of teaching Krav Maga, I also continue to train in Karate, Jiu Jitsu (blue belt), and in my free time I spend my time with my wife and daughter and try to get out to surf as much as I can.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business always comes with challenges – marketing, retaining students, resolving any student conflicts diplomatically, and finding time to be the boss, instructor, finance manager, etc all in one – so there were definitely struggles, but these were more like opportunities to learn. The advantage to starting small is that I had time to learn at a pace which was manageable and grow at a pace that was manageable – and now I am very proud to have a strong and consistent group of students who are the foundation of my business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Krav Maga Carlsbad – what should we know?
My program is Krav Maga (Israeli self-defense), currently working with both men and women, geared to adults (looking to expand to children’s programs in the future). I am most proud of my student community and the dedication and hard work I can see in each person – seeing them improve and gain confidence is the best reward an instructor can have. I bring many years of experience with a wide range of martial arts expertise, so students can benefit from not only gaining skills in Krav Maga, but also incorporating skills I have taken from Karate and Jiu Jitsu to create a unique mix and plenty of skills to learn and master.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination and perseverance…to succeed as a small business owner, you must have the mindset of “I will succeed” and not “I hope to succeed.”
