Today we’d like to introduce you to Ismael Bohme.
Ismael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Bike Garage started on 2014 in my house garage in Pacific Beach, the idea started with the necessity of moving around without a car and enjoying the beautiful weather of my new hometown San Diego. Actually the dream began a couple of years before that when I lived in Chile, I’m an MBA in marketing professional who use to work as chief of health program for one of the biggest companies in Chile, but I couldn’t stand working behind the desk anymore and always wanted to put my mechanic skill in to action. The first project was my own bike, which was and old beat up bike from the 90’s (1997 Specialized Stump jumper, bike that I still own) that I found in a garage sale, and I thought to myself “I wish I could bring her back to life”. So I did. I took it apart piece by piece and put it back together following my instincts and watching millions of YouTube videos, the result was one of the most rewarding feelings ever, so I decided to live for this.
Little by little I gather the resources thru personal and family loans to get the tools and the basic parts required for me to start helping out locals with their bikes, quickly I started building a reputation for delivering friendly and knowledgeable service for any bike needs.
The next step was starting a mobile bicycle repair service. To make bicycle maintenance even more convenient for customers, Bike Garage started offering free pick up, delivery and on-site bike repairs.
In February of 2017, I expanded Bike Garage into a brick and mortar bicycle shop in Pacific Beach, offering a wider variety of services and accessories, bicycle sales, rentals and a full service department for mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrids, cruisers and bicycles of all shapes and sizes.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has being everything but a smooth road haha, all this years on my garage it was actually my second job.
Once I found out this was what I wanted to do I start looking for a job as a bike mechanic and I worked in different bike shops around San Diego gathering knowledge, taking courses, studying online and working on personal bike projects until I got enough knowledge, expertise and ofcourse my passion for cycling helped a lot to start Bike Garage. It has being a whole journey and I have to be honest it has not being easy.
Just moving from another country is like you born again you are a nobody in many ways, the banks off course don’t give you any loans because you don’t have credit history, renting a place, getting a cellphone contract, insurance and everything that was easy in my previous life suddenly gets really hard haha, but I have to be honest, I can’t be more happy that I did it! I’m here, I’m doing what I love and after a while everything starts looking better and the rocky road is turning in a gravel road.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bike Garage story. Tell us more about the business.
One of my hobbies was being a ski instructor for kids in Lake Tahoe, CA and that was the best school for me to understand how important is to teach people, explained them how things work, what’s good or best for them and I’m proud to say that we offer a close, friendly and reliable service, I take my time with each of my costumers, understanding what they want and what they actually need, teach them and explain how cycling works, what is safe, what accessories they need for their type of riding and more.
We specialized in service, we offer everything from shocks rebuild, wheel building, brake bleeding to basic repairs like flat tires liked I mentioned before I love working with my hands and any mechanical problem or situation possible, that’s one of the reasons why we work on every project from bicycle restoration, electric kit conversion, custom builds and more.
We sell new bicycles (Raleigh Bicycles) and used bicycles, mainly hybrids bikes which are suitable for beach riding, comfort, commuting, working out and more. You can also find accessories for every kind of bike, baskets, bells, locks, lights, etc.
For what I learned working on other bikes shops I can say that we set our self apart from the rest of the bike shops in how inviting, friendly and easy going we are, you will never get a “no”, “we don’t have” or “we don’t do that” we’ll work that extra mile to give you an answer, advice to get you rolling.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Engaging in conversations has always brought my good luck, having an open ear for many people that just walk thru the shop to have a word before heading the beach. I loved being part of a community and giving something, that why we love working with local people, we shop local, engage, have conversations, ask about their lives and what they do, and if they don’t want to talk we respect that and engage with their silence haha
