Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Griffith.
Hi Bill, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a kid in Maine, my skills and interest in technology caught the attention of local businesses at an early age. While still in high school, I was recruited by a computer repair shop. Eventually, I started my own company, maintaining almost 100 residential and small business customers by the age of 19. As the years went on, I relocated several times and started over – first to Boston, then San Francisco, and finally San Diego. Today, G-Tech SD still operates with customers in all of those places. The last time I was interviewed by SD voyager, SD was very new to me. Since then, I have become a homeowner and launched another successful business: iFlyCameras and Commercial Drones Dispatch. We are currently covering the construction of the new Aztec Stadium from the air. We scouted through the local drone racing scene to handpick several of San Diego’s most skilled pilots and made them available for hire.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In my last interview, I mentioned plenty of challenges in starting an IT company. Overcoming those obstacles led to the ability to fund my new project for the last year without any sales until a few months ago. We found that in order to be useful and competitive in the commercial drone ops market, we really had to stand out and be the most prepared. The Co-Founder and I have invested heavily in capable aircraft, training, certification, business tools, and building a portfolio. We found out that 2 fathers already running other businesses couldn’t do it all ourselves, so we gathered some of the best talents we could find and built a team. Next lesson: having all of that does NOT mean automatic paid work. We partnered with several bigger orgs and lead gen platforms and finally started getting leads worthy of our time. We are now finding opportunities everywhere we look – very redeeming.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about iFlyCameras and Commercial Drones Dispatch?
We provide high end aerial photo/video services for a growing number of industries. We really shine on construction sites, making detailed maps and 3D models of projects on a regular basis which are used in critical decision making. Real estate, TV, Events, we do it all and we do it very well.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
So many! One thing I’ll share is that I got the vax, and it was painless. I don’t see what the fuss is about. 🤷♂️
