Meet Brandon Cheeks of 3R Personal Training in Mission Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Cheeks.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My personal training career started by chance. I was an unemployed electrician attending the New School of Architecture and Design. I had just started my junior year and I was really beginning to feel the financial burden of supporting a family of four and paying for school. Being a student athlete, I learned that I had to manage time efficiently in order to produce results. I trained a few my teammates in college during the off-season and produced great results with them. In what seemed to be the blink of an eye my personal training business grew so much that I decided to put the school on hold and continue to grow my business. In the last seven years, a have partnered with trainers, opened and closed training studios, rented space from other gym owners and trainers until I decided to take a chance and open my own private studio. After all, I had a large pool of clients from a spectrum of business backgrounds including, lawyers, city officials, and professional athletes, who continued to support my business. I not only owed it to them, but I needed to open my own studio for self-growth. It’s ironic that the first trainer that I worked for was the owner of the studio space that I ended up taking over. He was transitioning out of the business and I was looking to expand. Taking over the lease was scary! I set a few monthly and quarterly goals and made a plan to achieve them. So far everything has been working well

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Every mistake made must be used as a teaching point. Everything that I was taught actually turned out to be the exact opposite of what I should have been doing. From pricing to packaging, to scheduling and maintaining client records and even some training techniques and methods had to be researched and re-learned when I started my own business. One of the biggest struggles of opening the studio was, of course, financing everything including move-in cost and equipment cost. When searching for small business loans I quickly found out that my business is not big enough to get funding from banks or
lenders. They want to see X amount of profit for X amount of time. I didn’t meet any of their requirements! I managed to get the funding I needed through personal loans, dedicated clients and personal savings.
Another struggle I have faced is trying to find a balance between running the business and being a father and a husband. It’s tough! Having four boys and managing over 30 clients workout schedules can be somewhat complicated, to say the least.

3R Personal Training – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
3R Personal Training studio is a place where everyone is comfortable. There are no egos or judgments in here. The training sessions here are a private or small group and the classes never go over ten. I train clients of all fitness levels ranging from small groups of professional and collegiate athletes to deconditioned office personal trying to get in shape for a high school reunion. We specialize in making people feel good about themselves through physical activity.

3R Personal Training is known for the quarterly 21 Day Program. Where participants dedicate thirty minutes to fitness each day for 21 consecutive days. Each week there is a different nutritional goal to accomplish. I won’t give any more details about the program, you’ll have to join to find out more!

As a company, I am most proud of the client retention and commitment. I believe that each and every client of 3R is an integral part of the success of the business. Without a dedicated clientele base, a small business will fold. I feel as though we are a family.

All of us with similar goals, which are to look good and feel good! This is what sets 3R apart from other training facilities. When your session is complete and your laying on the gym floor asking, “why do I do this to myself”, the next session is usually warming up and cheering you on to finish strong. It takes a strong support network to achieve what seems undoable. We have that network here, every workout, every rep, every set.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was absolutely the day I got the keys to my studio. I was scared and doubtful. Being a man of faith, I understand where doubt comes from. That’s an easy one to handle. I just let it go and focused on what I was in control of which is treating each client with respect, being reliable and producing results. As for being scared, my wife encourages me relentlessly. What more does a man need? When I got the keys, I knew everything would work itself out. I was proud because I started with a single client. One good referral leads to another. I am proud because my business was built from treating people respectfully, being reliable and producing results and not climbing on or over someone else.
