Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Frazier.
Breanna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated college with a business degree and wanted to start a business. I saw a need in the San Diego drinking market for transportation options other than taxis and party buses (this was pre-uber/lyft). I saw this need mainly because I used to go out regularly with groups of 5-10 friends and have to hire multiple taxis or drive under the influence. So, I learned about the licensing and insurance requirements required to start my own transportation company. Coincidentally at this same time, a UCSD student named Jeff was selling his company, “The Drunk Driver.” I bought his client list and brand and then bought a used van for $10,000. I partnered with two other people and we began driving all the time. Business took off and we acquired 6 vans and a few employees.
Then, uber and lyft hit the scene and I knew that I had to change the business model or jump ship altogether. So, I decided to focus on acquiring nicer vehicles and advertise tours, especially brewery tours because the craft brewery scene was expanding rapidly at this time. Then, because of the negative reaction, I received from the breweries about my brand “The Drunk Driver” I sold the slogan I trademarked “We drive you to drink” for $5000 (yes!!!) and created a website and dba “BreweryToursSanDiego.com.” Additionally, I created 2 other dba’s “The Van Service” and “The DD Van Service” to further expand our reach. With the more wholesome image, we then began driving for ALC and Fresh Start Surgical Gifts during the week.
Today, 8 years after starting this business, I am most excited about expanding the touring side of the business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This was a learn as I go endeavor, so yes it was challenging. A lot of trial and error. A lot of hours googling government regulations, workers comp laws, etc. Then I also had to learn how to deal with unhappy clients and unhappy employees.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Van Service – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is different because I care a great deal about the experience of my clients. Also, I do not pay for advertising and I care more about retaining my current clients then acquiring new clients. I like helping my clients plan their events and I enjoy helping them with the details.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
May possibly be merging with another company similar to mine in the near future.
