Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Hicks.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always loved food service and especially the interaction with the public since I started my first job at the age of 19, 37 years ago.I was front room manager and server at the Daily News Café in Carlsbad being a single mother raising two beautiful daughters. The owner at that time Mrs.Linda Ruane asked to speak with me after work one day, and to my absolute astonishment said: “I would like to sell the yogurt & deli and would like you to buy it!” I assured her that I couldn’t possibly own a business as I had no education and had only completed 9th. grade and being a single mom had no other support. She assured me that after observing my work in her café for the past 5 years that I was indeed the perfect person for the job!! Well and so it was.
She drew up the paperwork we signed it right there on the picnic table out front of the shop, and on July 4th, 1996 I scooped my first scoop of ice cream professionally!!It has been an amazing 21-year ride I’ve seen many customers start coming in diapers and now their married with families of their own! and carrying on the Lindas tradition and it warms my heart.Winters are a struggle in the tourist beach town of Carlsbad and I have had to scramble like mad to keep it going but low and behold comes summer and were in full swing again! I can say with full confidence I made the right choice when I bought my shop.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been a smooth road, I’ve had to learn how to deal with allsorts of sales men and to read the fine print when signing contracts ,as I’m a bit of a trusting person by nature .Some of the customers are hard to deal with but when it is your lively hood you have to grin and bear it ! the 2008 housing crises caused one of the slowest tourists season to date and I worked day and night to keep afloat .Teen age employees are one of my biggest challenges ,getting them to understand while it is a fun job, beach atmosphere it is my whole means of support and that’s why there are rules and a boss, lol
Lindas Yogurt & Deli – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are absolutely one of a kind !! Lindas is a full Deli with fresh piled high sandwiches, gourmet salads and home made soups created by yours truly. We also have delicious non fat yogurts, including sugar free and dairy free Dole Whip pineapple, just like Disney land and we encourage all to sample abundantly.
We carry 16 flavors of Dryers Grand ice creams, and make old fashioned malts sundaes and banana splits we make fresh fruit smoothies and acia bowls and to top it all off a variety of coffee drinks to rival star bucks, hot, iced or blended. But what I’m most proud of is our relationship’s with our regular and our tourists from around the country and the world.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
That’s a tough one there have been many great moments but to choose one I would say, that after a few years into it I decided to remodel and decorate with a tiki theme. I hired a professional artist and interior decorator Bill Vollbrecht a designer from Lego-Land,and we had a blast going to L.A. to pick the decor and he let me help paint so it really felt like I was involved in the project. We were closed for a couple days and I invited all my regular customers and friends to come to the Grand unveiling of LINDA’S TIKI ROOM for a party with food and drinks ,the staff and I dressed up in Hawaiian attire and put a lei on each person as they arrived. I was quite nervous if The Linda herself would come and if she would like it ..
And to my great joy she and her whole family came and when I saw her face I was assured that she not only liked it but that I had not let her down .One more outstanding thing I would love to add is My greatest joy I hired a young girl 16 years old who had been coming to Linda’s since she was 4yrs, old before I owned it and her dream was to someday work there.Shawnta work along side me for 15 years and graduated from the art institute with a bachelor in culinary,. and is now out in the big wide world doing her thing and has become my third daughter .
