Meet Brendan Quigley of Quigley Fine Wines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Quigley.

Brendan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My wife Christina and I began Quigley Fine Wines in 2010 after working in the wine business for about 12 years. Our mission was to be able to import the small, family owned wineries from Italy, France and Spain that I had fallen in love with during our visits to Europe. My business partners, Jeff and Mary Shapiro, shared this same passion and vision after their many trips to Europe. We all agreed that the best wines you taste while in Europe are never the “big names” that you see on store shelves here in the US, but instead were the more traditional, tiny producers who had never before exported their wines to the US.

We spent about 18 months travelling and tasting wines from all over Europe’s most famous wine regions – Tuscany, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rioja to name a few – developing relationships with these families and winemakers. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the wine makers and the wine drinker, telling the stories and sharing the culture that these wonderful families put into every bottle they make.

We decided that we would sell these wines direct to the consumer here in the US, rather than through the normal supply chain of Importer – Wholesaler – Retailer – Consumer where these stories are more often lost. To achieve this goal, we needed a highly skilled and passionate sales team and we have been lucky enough to develop that team, our wine consultants, who work one on one with their customers from all over the US.

It is through this shared passion for great wines between the owners of Quigley Fine Wines and my amazing staff that this vision has become reality.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was never easy but I was lucky enough to have the support of my wife and my business partners all along the journey.

Getting all the required licenses from the state and federal entities was a challenge that was not much fun but we managed to pull it all together.

Additionally, putting in the travel time was difficult because I have two small children and being away was never easy.

Developing a sales team and a staff that cared for the business deeply was also difficult but we never lost the faith and vision that what we were building was worthwhile and unique.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are unique in that we import wines and sell direct to the consumer. This allows us to tell the story behind each wine we sell.

We are also unique in that we only work with wineries who share a deep respect for nature and sustainability. We all have an impact on our planet and by being conscious about how these wines are produced we can help maintain the environment where these wines are made.

What I am most proud of is that every single bottle of wine we sell was selected by me based on one simple criteria – I had to love it. It makes my job easier to sell these wines when I know that I love to drink each and every one of them.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Brooklyn, NYC and lived on the east coast all of my childhood.

I was intense but fun loving. Not an easy child for my parents as I was willful and pretty darn convincing to get my way. I was lucky because my family was incredibly loving and warm and always there for each other.

I loved sports, still do, and loved to travel.

As a teen, I was a bit of a wild child – a partier for sure, but I was able to reign that in during my mid-twenties.
