Meet Bret Scott of Willow Creek Archery in Escondido

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bret Scott.

Bret, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Willow Creek Archery has been in business for approx. 30 years. I bought it one year ago, when my friend (the previous owner) decided to retire, who I had known for about 20+ years.

I have been involved in archery for 32 years now, hunting and some target. I decided to retire from the sheet metal industry where I had also worked for 32 years and buy the shop to do something I really loved! I had been working out of my garage repairing and tuning bows for about 15 years now so it was a natural fit. I have hunted all over the world with my bow, Africa, Canada, US, and going to Greenland in April! So I have a lot of experience with the equipment and techniques involved. Since buying the shop I am getting more involved in the Target side as well. We have shooters that compete in “Indoor”, Outdoor, and 3D tournaments.

Since I have been shooting so long, I have a lot of contacts in the archery industry so that has really helped the business as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been fairly smooth. The previous owner helped out for the first month and a half, which helped tremendously! The biggest learning curve has been inventory, learning what items to buy (that will sell) and how much to buy at a time. I pretty much have that down and look forward to the future!

Willow Creek Archery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Willow Creek Archery is a full-service shop, we sell bows and all the related equipment. We also service and repair all bows. We stock compounds and recurves for all aspects of shooting, from recreational to hunting to serious target archery.
I have just finished remodeling the whole store to give it the look and feel of an outdoor sports store.

In back we have 8 lanes in a 20-yard shooting area. We have open shooting time, leagues, Adult lessons, and a kids JOAD program.

We are probably known to be a predominately hunting shop, but we have been expanding the target side. In fact, our JOAD team (junior Olympic archery development) which is kids from 8-21 are pretty well known around the target circuit with their talent!

One thing we specialize in is customer service! All of our employees treat every customer, no matter if they are spending a thousand dollars or just asking questions trying to learn, with patience and respect. We will spend as much time with the customer as they need to answer all of their questions. Sometimes new shooters are intimidated by the sport and are afraid to ask questions. I always tell them if they don’t ask they won’t learn. I will always take the time to teach them as much as possible so they feel completely confident when they leave!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is every time I fit a customer with a new bow, whether experienced or first time and see the smile on their face when they start shooting! Usually, one shot and they are hooked for life!
