Meet Brian Hoffman of Ebike Cargo Products in Shelter Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Hoffman.

Brian, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Two years ago, I was looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint. I started by commuting on an electric cargo bike vs. driving my SUV. I have pretty average transportation needs and I found that “life by bike” could be challenging. I struggled to carry around my daily needs on the bicycle and any time I needed to make a stop, I would have to carry my belongings with me or they would be stolen. This led me to fabricate some large, locking cargo cases that I mounted to my bicycle. After that point, “life by bike” was really possible for me. I put 8000 miles on my bicycle that year and less than 1000 on my SUV.

Excited strangers often asked me where I had gotten the cargo boxes and how much they cost. I put some photos of my bike up on social media, and people started to notice. I then made some design improvements and made some production Velockers to give to friends and display at local bike shops. The concept attracted the attention of some bicycle industry insiders and I was invited to Germany to exhibit with Benno Bikes at Eurobike 2019. Having bootstrapped businesses in the past, I realized that we would need outside investment to scale this project to its full potential. We are currently seeking investors to help us scale Ebike Cargo Products to share the future of sustainable transportation with the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We put a lot of resources into a crowdfunding campaign which did not work out in the long run. Our desire to manufacture in the US has been challenging. It seems that manufacturing in China has been the modus operandi of most successful entrepreneurs for decades. We do not see this as a good, sustainable long term strategy for US companies.

Please tell us about Ebike Cargo Products.
We are a small four-person company with revolutionary ideas about what society should be. Our Velocker project will be a useful tool in humanity’s fight against global warming. We need to stop burning oil and fossil fuels asap, Velockers will empower millions of people around the world to do so. We spread awareness and bring others along every single day. We are proud of our products and the alliances that we have built so far while realizing how much is left to do.

We make products that are so far out of the ordinary that people often take quite some time to understand what they are looking at. This is a good thing. With Doghook a few years ago, and now with Velocker, people eventually understand what we are trying to do. They just need to see our products in use pertaining to their lives, and they eventually say “wow, what an amazing idea!”

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I have learned many, many lessons from this experience so far and I have a lot left to learn. One thing that I would share is that the more disruptive (and important), your idea, the harder it is to bring people along. I have learned the importance of doing meaningful work and being patient with customers.
