Meet Calvin Robinson of DJ GATTIIIYEE in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Robinson.

Calvin, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Started DJing because of the movie black panther that was released in February 2018 this movie has given me the motivation and confidence to pursue being the best DJ in the world. I spent the majority of my time if I was not working I was practicing and learning everything I could about DJing. However, the year 2019 has for sure been a great run I have done shows in the San Diego area at The Merrow, Brick by Brick and Queen Bees. Those shows have brought me on a good path and have changed the way I play music for sure. I have learned a lot from the different crowds I have played in front of during my sets. The more shows I do the better I am getting which is good.

My next show is at The Holding Company in Ocean Beach, California, January 26, 2020 music starts at 8:00 pm. I expect to have a great turn out as far as fans coming out to watch me perform my Couples Only Vol.1 on cd live. Some of my fans have told me that they liked Couples Only Vol. 1 it is called that because I would like to fill a room with double the people coming out to watch me perform. So, if they have a friend they need to call them up and I want them to say, “let’s get up we going dancing tonight with DJ GATTIIIYEE.” That’s what I would like all my fans to look forward to when they come to watch my live shows. As far as this venue goes I like everything it has to offer as far as food, drinks and live music entertainment it also has a great view of the ocean from the rooftop. If anyone would like tickets any of my shows visit: https://myafton.com/DJGATTIIIYEE.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road the cost of living and the minimum wage in California is not where it is supposed. If these departments would work together I feel like the working class would benefit from it. For myself it’s tough trying to find a place to live at the same time balancing work, practice and selling tickets. I feel like if I could practice just as much or if not more as a DJ that has residency somewhere I would be in the discussion as a big time DJ. I already have the good music to back up that statement I just have to figure out how I can manage to just DJ and sale tickets. The struggle feels like I am just a part-time DJ because my main focus is on work and finding a place to live. On that note, with the cost of living being high for myself it’s like taking baby steps to be the best.

Another obstacle would be the DJ competition for residency at Omnia in San Diego on October 17, 2019, which indeed was a bump in the road for myself I lost the competition. Losing though gave me a feeling like I had lost everything that I was working hard for at that moment in time. I only blame myself for that lost I know if I would have put in more work then the work I did I would have won that competition for sure. Anyways, I am still on my path doing great things I am not giving up. Even though I lost the competition it was just a learning process for myself. From here on out every lost for myself will be a win because no matter what there is always something to gain from a loss. I will just look at what were the positives and not the negatives. I know it will take more work in 2020 because 2019 was just another practice year to let the competition know that I am here.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a disc jockey that loves playing the music that everyone loves to hear from the west coast all over the world. I sell tickets for the venues that I DJ at for every show. There has not been a show where anyone has shown up some I am very thankful for that and all the people that have shown up to these venues. I specialize in playing Hip-hop, RnB, & Pop with artists like Cardi B, Beyoncé, Jacquees and also customer service is my number one priority if the customers are not happy then I need to figure it out asap. I am known for having good music at my shows, people like a lot of the songs that I play during my sets. With that said, what I am most proud of as a DJ is the growth with the shows I started with a couple of venues and now more venues are starting to get booked. What sets myself apart from others is the song choices I am always staying relevant and still providing sounds from the 20th century. The vibe in my music is or never will be heard in another DJ that is for sure I am one of a kind it’s the slappy, poppy and groovy baby. Also, I am personable I like to know what people would like to hear if it sounds good then I will make sure to have it available asap. Lastly, I am always trying to create a very happy atmosphere where ever I play bringing positive vibes.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hardworking would be a characteristic that I feel is most important to my success because that is what it takes to get what you want when you want it. The word hardworking me means that I need to continue practicing my DJing skills more to be successful in the world. There’s a lot of importance in hardworking because it has a lot to do with the effort that someone is willing to put into their work. A quote that I like is by Kevin Hart, “Everybody wants to be famous, but nobody wants to do the work. I live by that. You grind hard so you can play hard.“ This is a quote that everyone should follow if they are looking to pursue something big in their life. I took this quote as if it was intended for myself and it was telling me to be famous I have to put in the work don’t expect anything to be given. On another note, I have seen with a lot of professionals that are above me have put in a lot of work overtime and it has paid off for them. So I will continue to learn from all these professionals that have come before myself and be better than them when it comes to putting in effort toward Djing. It takes a lot of work to get known all over the world. It’s tough but it’s do-able with the right motivation and hustle.
