Caravan World Music Ensemble, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
San Diego County is home to a number of music ensembles specializing in various world-music traditions. However, none has been dedicated specifically to the study and practice of music from the Middle East and North Africa. Until now.

How did the ensemble get started?
Caravan Ensemble was established in 2019 by Grossmont College as a way to represent the diversity in our community. The ensemble, open to students and community members regardless of instrument or level, focuses on the wealth of music cultures from as far east as Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan, stretching across the rim of North Africa, all the way west to Andalusia, Spain.

How did the ensemble cope during the pandemic?
During the pandemic, everyone developed new skills. Ours included technology and recording (hear our work on soundclick), as well as deeper analysis of the music (which helps you play it better).

What are next steps for the ensemble now?
With Grossmont College music ensembles back in-person in the Fall, we will continue to use the recording and learning skills developed during the pandemic, as well as enjoy the social aspect of safely making music together. A limited-audience concert is planned in the brand new performing arts complex on campus in December!
