Meet Marcy Morrison of Careers with Wings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Morrison.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey has been one of always finding out how I can use my own passions and purpose to make a difference in the world or as I like to say discovering how I can live my own Passion + Purpose = World Change Formula. I have a deep passion for cross-cultural experiences and it all started with being an AFS Exchange Student from my hometown on the Jersey Shore to Brisbane, Australia during my last year of high school. This experience inspired me to get my Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs/Spanish from James Madison University and study in Spain.

When I graduated it was a recession and I heard that I would be lucky enough to get any job let alone my dream job, but I chose not to listen to that and stayed focused on my dream to use my Spanish to make a difference in the world. Through a connection from undergrad, I was led to the Inter-American Foundation outside of Washington, D.C. where I worked in El Salvador to help break the cycle of poverty through grassroots development. While doing this work, someone asked me to help them with a business plan and have never had any business experience – I said what’s that? Then a light bulb went off and I thought – I could save the world better if I had business experience.

That is what led me to San Diego in 1994 to receive my Master’s Degree in International Management/Latin America from University of California, San Diego. After graduate school, I worked at Qualcomm in International Marketing to get business experience and after that, I used to travel to Latin America 5 times a year for my job at the Institute of the Americas on the campus of UCSD. I always seek out opportunities to travel to experience this incredible world live in and its amazing people – this year includes Tulum, Mexico, Thailand and Bali. I have been to almost every country in Latin America including visiting Machu Picchu and spending 10 days in the Amazon Rainforest with the indigenous peoples. I have also traveled all over Europe as well as been to Malaysia and Singapore and I look forward to continuing to explore more parts of the amazing world we live in.

In 2001, my first son Cameron was born and my second son Logan was born in 2004. I stayed home with both of them for 3 ½ years. During this time, I asked myself the question that I always ask myself along with my own journey and I ask my clients – how can I use my passions and talents to make a difference in the world. A key part of this question for me at this stage of my life was how can I create something that allows me the flexibility of also being with my children. What came to me was a strong desire to help others uncover and live their passion and purpose and tie that to making a difference in the world. I naturally love to help people on their journey – I feel that my talents as someone who knows how to ask the right questions, listen, be a cheerleader for others, develop a strategy, and make connections makes me a natural coach.

Also, I had spoken at a variety of events including the United Nations International Career Day and also served on my graduate school board where I helped build a career mentoring program. From that, Careers with Wings ( was born in 2007 and it has been incredible to allow it to continue to evolve to develop many methods of support to help others live dreams. I have written two books – “Finding Your Passion: The Easy Guide to Your Dream Career” and “Falling in Love with Me: An Personal Journey and A Guide to Falling in Love with You” (English/Spanish). I help others on their journey through coaching, speaking, and workshops with organizations like National Charity League and corporations including Illumina and Qualcomm.

I have also worked in the outplacement arena during the economic recession and assisted layoffs and supported people in their transition in both English/Spanish. I am equally dedicated to my vision of giving children, families and communities opportunities – or wings – to rise above poverty – Children with Wings. For the last 4 years, I have served on the Steering Committee of the Community Alliance for Youth Success (CAYS) with Stedman Graham, Bobbi De Porter of Quantum Learning Network and other youth education/empowerment thought leaders.

CAYS launched Youth Success Week in January 2016 with the Oceanside Unified School District in San Diego to serve as a nationwide model that is pulling together community resources and leaders to ensure youth success. I am a former Board Member of Just in Time for Foster Youth where I helped build Career Horizons for Young Women and I still teach classes on finding your passion and mentor young women. I know this is the core of my own purpose stemming from me having a challenging childhood. I always say that often our challenges provide us the golden nugget which is our purpose and how we are meant to serve others and is the difference we will make in the world.

My partner Eric Mowrey and I met living our passion and purpose at the Community Alliance for Youth Success. Eric who is a very talented videographer/photographer/storyteller and I are working together to create powerful experiences domestically and internationally for both youth and adults to help them uncover and live their Passion + Purpose = World Change formulas – to learn more about what we are doing – please visit and you can reach me via email

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been smooth. I mentioned some of the struggles along the way in the previous question including having a challenging childhood that I had to overcome and still work to overcome. However, as I said – I know that this is my purpose and I know is the reason that I am here which is to help young people overcome their challenges and live their dreams.

I also mentioned that I was told that my dream wasn’t possible when I graduated undergrad, but I chose to believe in myself which is now a chapter in my book Finding Your Passion that helps others believe in themselves when the world tells them that their dream isn’t possible.

I went through a divorce in 2011, which was a very challenging time when my kids were 10 and 7. I had to put my business on hold for a short period while I went back to work and it was an intense self-discovery period of finding my new identity after 17 years with my ex-husband. That led me to write my second book Falling In Love with Me to share my own journey and to help others on theirs. I realize after so many years of coaching that falling in love with ourselves is truly the first and most important part of the journey to living our dreams.

Also having my own business is a constant learning process of how to become a great entrepreneur and leader tied to making a difference in the world.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Careers with Wings – story. Tell us more about the business.
I believe that I answered most of these questions in the first question – if you feel that you need additional information please let me know. I am most proud of the 100’s of adults and youth we have helped. I have over 130 testimonials on LinkedIn – you can see some of them on these links and

Also here is an interview I did with a former client Ken Davenport who is living his Passion + Purpose = World Change formula as the CEO of Mission Edge that provides back-office support to over 50 non-profits in San Diego and here is an interview I did with Stedman Graham and Bobbi DePorter about the Community Alliance for Youth Success

I feel what sets us apart is that we have woven together our life journeys, passion, purpose talents to live our own Passion + Purpose = World Change formulas to help others do the same so they are happy and make the difference they were brought here to make.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a firm believer that everything does happen for a reason and I do believe when we are clear about what we want to create in our lives and visualize it and make an effort to share that dream with as many people we can – that it isn’t luck but I believe is that serendipity and synchronicity do show up to connect us with the right people and the right opportunities at the right time – we just need to pay attention and recognize those opportunities when they come and take action and keep believing even when it seems impossible or after we have hit many challenges/obstacles.

And sometimes the challenges and obstacles are blessings in disguise that lead us to our purpose. For example, part of how I got led to being a speaker and an author came from me having a falling out with a family member which seemed devastating at the time.

However, through having to learn forgiveness, led me to work with an inspirational speaker/author which paved the way for me following the same path which I would have never gone down had this not happened.
