Today we’d like to introduce you to Carina Fleckner.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and I’m a photographer in San Diego, California.
I’m also a teacher, and I’ve been teaching English as a second language for 18 years. I love it because it gives me a chance to travel and meet people from all over the world.
I’ve taught in Brazil, Spain, and England, and in San Diego, I teach international students who come to the U.S. to improve their English. It’s a very rewarding job, and the contact with different cultures is priceless.
I met my husband when we were both teaching in Spain, and we had been dating for five years when he proposed. So we both moved to Seattle where he’s originally from and where his family lives.
At that time I couldn’t work because I was waiting on my work permit so I decided to dedicate my time to studying photography since I was very passionate about taking photos at concerts and live music events and I got very good results shooting from the crowd with my compact camera.
That was when I decided to invest in a good camera to get more practice and advance in my career as a photographer.
We moved to San Diego 4 years ago, and since then, I have done weddings, personal branding, family, concerts, and events. I’m still teaching in the morning, but I’m slowly transitioning to photography full time! It’s a tough decision because I love teaching and I’ll miss getting to know people from different countries and learning from them. I guess I can always look into travel photography. That way I can still connect with people and their cultures.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a photographer, and I love working with people. I do weddings, portraits, graduation, events, and live music. My goal is to capture people’s special moments so they can just enjoy whatever they’re celebrating while I make sure I get beautiful shots and present my clients with images that will last a lifetime and beyond.
I love music, so when I’m shooting concerts I’m in my happy place!
I also do personal branding photography, and I hope that, through my photos, I can help local entrepreneurs grow their businesses by building an online presence and connecting with their clients on a more personal level.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national, or international events and issues affect your art?
I don’t think it has changed. The issues we have going on in the world today may be different, but the role of artists has always been to connect and collaborate with others, inspire people, and bring awareness and joy to their communities.
They also invite people to engage in discussions, whether they’re about politics, society, or personal growth, and this interaction helps move us toward progress.
I always try to engage my followers on social media with questions or statements for them to think about or comment on when I post a photo.
I’ve recently started reading books and listening to podcasts about personal growth, and I think this is so important. If we all work on becoming better people, we can make our communities better, and that will create a better world as well.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
