Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Gaffney.
Caroline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a passion for dogs and baking. When thinking of starting my own business, I thought about putting these two passions together. When thinking about the social aspect of my project, helping dogs in some way was a big mission. As my own dog Squirt is a very important part of my life, I always want the best for him in every way.
I also know many other people feel the same. The idea of dog treats came to mind, and I started to research different treat trends as well as what was needed on the market. I found that diabetes is a huge problem in many dogs across America and that there are not many treat options that are specifically safe for or tailed to their needs on the market.
This presented the idea of making homemade, fresh, wholesome, and completely natural dog treats, safe for diabetic dogs. I researched beneficial ingredients that would promote health in all dogs, but especially diabetics, and created my recipes, as well as got the ingredients in my treats approved by the vet.
The goal of my treats is also to spread awareness for dog health and to start putting more dog food on the market that will not in any way lead to health problems.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a fairly smooth road when creating my business idea and launching it. However, there has been issues such as how to sell them, as my treats are best when refrigerated and do not have preservatives. I overcame this obstacle when I decided to deliver my fresh treats locally. The local deliveries also provide an incentive to customers, as it is a free service to people who live locally.
Caroline’s Pure Pooch Treats – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I handcraft and sell dog treats that promote wellness and are safe for diabetic dogs. I bake wholesome, fruit and vegetable based dog treats, that aim to supply health and nourishment for all dogs, especially with diabetes.
I make and sell two recipes, pumpkin, and sweet potato. I am known for my free local deliveries of the fresh treats, the fact that I only use completely pure ingredients when making them, and that they smell great and are small enough to use throughout the day.
With diabetes on the rise in dogs, I am proud that I am offering a safe treat option for these dogs that will keep them healthy. Because there are very few options for diabetic dogs, my treats will help them have more safe options. Also, my treats are a step in the right direction to helping all dogs lead a healthier lifestyle.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far is when I delivered my first order of treats and saw my customer’s dogs jump up to eat them. This was followed by other dogs who enjoyed my treats. It was exciting to see the dogs enjoy something so healthy that I had worked very hard on creating.
- I charge 10 dollars for a bag of 30 treats for both recipes. Because these treats do not have any preservatives, I recommend that you refrigerate or freeze for freshness. I only offer free deliveries in the local La Jolla area, but there is also an option for customers to pick up their order in person.
