Today we’d like to introduce you to Caryn Kirchhoff-Herrera.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I decided to attend esthetician school after I had gotten hurt while I was a dance major at Grossmont College. I quickly realized that if I was already getting hurt, that my passion for dance was not going be my career. Once I began esthetic training I took to it like a fish to water. I was meant to do it! I loved everything that I was learning and I really loved to take care of people and this was the way that I could do it. While I was in school I had attended a full body waxing class and I knew that was what I wanted to do was to teach and have a practice of my own! After I got my esthetician license I worked at a few different spas. I had decided to apply to the Satin Smooth which is a very well-known wax company that I had dreamed of working for. Very quickly I had gotten a response to interview! I was thrilled and I was even more thrilled to find out that I had gotten the job! Soon after getting my dream job, I had decided to take the leap and start my own business. That was the best decision that I had ever made. It was hard work in the beginning working long hours 7 days a week, in order to build my base of clients. When I started my own place I was sharing a room with my sister who is a massage therapist. Her room quickly became my room, then after about a year there I truly went out and rented a larger studio that had 1 treatment room and a waiting area. After 2 years there I convinced my best friend Julie whom I met at spa we worked at to come and work for me! So that took me to a space that had 3 treatment rooms. After not even a year, we had to move due to a zoning issue. As you can imagine I was super stressed to have to find another space. It is not easy to do but, I found the perfect space which is where we are now! This amazing space has 6 rooms and I have 2 more amazing ladies with me there too! Along the way I had started playing with creating my own skin care products! That has become a huge passion for me! This is the beginning for me and my journey as an entrepreneur and I am planning on opening another spa in 2018!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most definitely not. I had the full support from my mom but when I told my dad I was dropping out of college to become an esthetician he was less than thrilled. He later warmed up and realized it was what I was meant to do. Once I became licensed it was very difficult to find a job. Every company wanted you to have years of experience. Eventually I found a job at a body wrap place, and then at the full body waxing studio. Which I loved! After being there for maybe a year I got laid off. That was a struggle that had never happened to me before. At that point I was unable to find another job so I decided to go back to school and become an RN because then I could be a medical esthetician and I would be able to perform Botox and such, which I quickly realized that was not for me. While in school though I had gotten a job at the spa that I stayed at until I got the teaching job with Satin Smooth and when I decided to open my open business! After some growing pains with the previous locations of my business everything has been wonderful with my current location.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sugar Plum Skin Care is a place where you can come and be completely taken as you are. I am a very laid back person and that is the vibe I wanted the spa to take on as well. I love to take care of people and reduce their stress and allow them to truly unwind with me and leave feeling amazing! I would say that I specialize in natural customized skin care. I mix parts of your facial treatment right in the room with you! I have never been a believer in a one size fits all facial. Every time a client comes to me their skin is not in the same condition, therefore I like to customize thew treatment to the condition of the skin. I thrive on the feedback that I get from clients for the services that I have provided and the relationships that we build. I am proud that I can offer services that people visit from all over San Diego for! I would say the thing that sets me apart from others is this is truly my passion. I enjoy every aspect of what I do, even down to the nitty gritty parts. Such as working to the point of depletion to start my business and the ability to create something that is my own with my business, my products and growing with my team of ladies! We also offer monthly memberships to enable our clients to be able to come in on a more frequent basis! I truly feel that I have a more holistic approach to the industry, rather than focusing on sales and a quick fix for a range of skin conditions. I like to provide education on the effects of lifestyle and diet choices in and on our bodies, rather than reverting to harsh chemicals that will only treat the symptom.
What were you like growing up?
Ever since I was a young girl, I feel I’ve always been myself and nothing else. I always looked out for those around me and make sure everyone is as happy and stress-free as possible. Sometimes I’d even look out for others more than myself, but I couldn’t help it. As I grew older, and moved all the way across the country, I would always look out for my friends when we would go dancing, making sure my girls were all safe, and we were all enjoying our nights to the fullest. This carried into my adulthood where I would always look out for the happiness of my family, try to eliminate any stress or drama, and just try to make the best of any situation. These experiences have helped me grow so much and carry these qualities into my career and my business, and also helped me grow into a strong woman overall. I’ve had some very bad experiences throughout my life, but I wouldn’t change a thing as it’s helped me develop into the person I am today. As for my interests, I live for the outdoors. I love hiking, mountain biking, and just being active! I also feel as if music is in my soul. I love going to concerts and huge 3 day music festivals, as I feel the energy of the music and the vibes of so many people dancing and having a tremendously great time feed my soul. I truly feel the balance I have of friends, music, outdoors, family, my business, and even my struggles, makes me want to thrive and be the best person I can possibly be for myself and the people I love!
