Today we’d like to introduce you to Cash Scott.
Cash, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had been tattooing already for 9 years and the current shop I was at was relocating. My mentor offered me the opportunity to take over the current shop under the ownership of myself and my wife, Michelle, directly. We were about to get married and we always knew our own shop was the next step- we welcomed the chance as the first big exciting thing to happen in our first chapter. We opened Chapter One August 1, 2011 with a goal to house a community of artists who produce exceptional work while maintaining a humble and sincere work environment. Our clients seem to think we did just that! At Chapter One you can find artists who are not only beyond talented but are personable and professional. The tattoos created here are of the highest quality by a very special group of people who are passionate and committed to the sacred bond between artist and client. We selected each tattoo artist ourselves, most of them doing their apprenticeships under me directly.
Collectively, everyone at the shop shares our vision of a tattoo shop that is intimate not intimidating. We grew out of our first home at 4861 Newport Ave and moved 2 doors down to 4857 Newport Ave in March 2016. We remodeled the space ourselves (with a ton of help from friends and family) and with the combination of Michelle’s killer instinct for aesthetics and the teams’ personal contributions of art- it represents our vision from the ground up.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we first opened, we were just hoping we could keep the lights on. It was a huge leap and we were full of energy and excitement. We took that momentum and worked our butts off! We had a ton of support from friends, family and our clients. The beginning was easy- the challenge is maintaining the awesome beast we created. For me personally, the work life balance is a struggle. I have cut out all the fluff in my life and am divided between the two loves of my life; my family and tattooing.
Please tell us about Chapter One Tattoo.
We do custom tattooing and we offer an artist for everyone’s taste. We have realistic artists, American Traditional, Japanese Traditional, watercolor, photo realism, artists that specialize in dot work, black and gray and full color. No matter what your preference is we promise one of our team members can create the perfect, custom tattoo for you. Besides the talent aspect of it I think we are best known for consistency. There are no bad days at the shop. The energy is always on point and happy. The feedback we are constantly getting is how friendly and professional each and every person is, always. And it is 100 % genuine. We are like a big family- but with better (and dirtier) jokes. The work that we do never wavers because that’s what we are committed to. Our clients seek us out not only for the great tattoos we produce but because we seriously have the best human beings in the world working for us. Michelle and I couldn’t be more proud. I love the fact we created a space where anyone at any age (18 and older, of course) feels comfortable here. There’s no chips on anyone’s shoulders and no intimidation. Tattooing has evolved into a much more accepted art form in the last decade and we are thrilled to embrace that with anyone who we are lucky enough to have the honor to tattoo.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would say watching my mom draw. She would do these beautiful portraits and it was super intriguing and inspiring. It’s what made me become more involved in art and as a result, led me to the career path I have now. Love ya mom!
