Meet Catharina Nilsson of onePRgroup in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catharina Nilsson.

Catharina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
onePRgroup was created by both myself and one of my best friends from college, Irina Gedarevich – we actually both met in our sophomore year at the University of San Diego after being randomly placed together as roommates! Irina started her own marketing agency, eSEOspace, about a year ago now, soon after I finished grad school at Lund University in Sweden and landed a job at a PR agency in Los Angeles.

Irina and I met up at the beginning of this year and were discussing what we wanted our future to look like, career-wise, and we mused about how great it would be if I could help her build out the PR side of her business. At the time, I had a stable paycheck and wasn’t in a position to leave it, especially because living in LA isn’t cheap.

Fast forward, a few months and COVID-19 hit. A few weeks after I started working from home, I was let go from my old agency. The very same day, I called up Irina and told her my current situation, realizing that what had happened was almost a blessing in disguise since I could now pursue my dream career path. Almost immediately, I was introduced to a few of her clients who were interested in pursuing PR and media relations, and begun helping them put together a cohesive strategy.

After a couple months into consulting for eSEOspace, we started discussing our long-term plans and the goals that we both had for ourselves. We both came to the conclusion that it would be amazing to create a new startup that would mainly be dedicated to PR and branding, so that I could meet my own goal of owning and running my own business. While we are both co-founders in this endeavor, and eSEOspace is partnered with onePRgroup, I will head up the PR and branding component, while Irina will continue to tackle the marketing side of things.

While we are still in the beginning stages of the business today, we have already signed on a few clients and exciting projects are in the works. We are ecstatic for the future and look forward to working with innovative and unique startups and entrepreneurs.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The entire ride has been smoother than I would have expected, but it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows either. I would say that the main struggle in the very beginning was to take the leap of faith in starting the business in the first place. I think many people feel scared or nervous about diving into a new business venture, as it is usually difficult to figure out all the necessary steps that need to be taken, as well as determine the costs that will be required and the manpower that it will take to get it going. Luckily, Irina already had an established business, so we have been able to use a lot of resources from eSEOspace to help us get started.

In addition to this, we were fortunate to have already worked with previous clients who are now joining us on our journey with onePRgroup. However, I do think another struggle we will have is to gain new long-term clients and generate those leads using platforms like UpCity and Thumbtack. They require a lot of former client reviews, and since we are pretty new to the scene, it will take time to build up relationships, retain clients as well as garner those vital reviews.

Further, the entire process of setting up a business was made much easier using Irina’s previous knowledge and experience, but the amount of components that go into it e.g. getting an EIN number, writing up a business contract, setting up the website, etc. all take massive amounts of energy and time that you need to account for before officially launching.

Overall, the struggles of mentally preparing to launch a business, the process of successfully setting up a business, as well as garnering reviews and long-term clients, far outweigh the positives of being your own boss and choosing exactly when and how you want the business to run.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
onePRgroup is a boutique, full-service PR and branding agency. As PR and branding enthusiasts, we are passionate about helping brands reach their fullest potential. Our mission is to create unique, 100% personalized and carefully constructed solutions that will enable brands to fulfill their purpose, while maximizing their impact.

We specialize in PR and branding services first and foremost, such as media relations and brand management, as well as website design/development, content marketing, event management and SEO/SEM. I would say that we are most known for being highly dedicated, motivated, personable and communicative in all aspects of the business and our main goal is to help make our clients’ dreams a reality.

As a company, we are most proud of bridging both PR and digital marketing into one, using both my own as well as Irina’s expertise and background. The traditional way of conducting PR has proved to be pretty outdated and with digital marketing and SEO in our toolkit, we can find new and innovative avenues to securing placements in top-tier outlets.

I believe that we are set apart from others because Irina and I both have different knowledge and backgrounds as I stated before, particularly in that she studied Behavioral Neuroscience while I studied International Business and Marketing at university. In this way, we both can use our own unique outlooks when it comes to formulating custom solutions for our clients. In addition to this, as a boutique agency, we are able to give extra attention to our clients and go above and beyond their needs and expectations to deliver truly great, high-quality results.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, I’m not sure that I would have done much differently. This is similar to the question, “If you could go back and do it all over again, would you have done anything differently?” and I always answer no, because I don’t live with any regrets. I believe that you learn the most from your past mistakes and failures, and without having lived through them, you wouldn’t be where you are today.
