Today we’d like to introduce you to Charvee & Dr. Vishaal Buch.
Hi Charvee & Dr. Buch, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Dr. Vishaal Buch Buch, MD: I am a first-generation South Asian/American (my family is from India), and I was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My formative years happened in a small town north of Santa Barbara, California, called Lompoc. After high school, I went to UC San Diego for Bioengineering and Pre-Med. After undergraduate, I joined the US Air Force, and with them, I learned to become a Family Medicine Physician and Air Force Officer. Because of my Air Force experiences, I have worked in military medical facilities in Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Nevada, California, Washington State, and South Korea. It was in medical school I met the most important person in my life, my wife and best friend Charvee. She expanded my world in so many ways, from communication to empathy, to food and travel, to culture and music; she is the best thing to happen to me. Together, we have seen that no matter where you are in the world, people and their health conditions are the same. Diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, depression, pregnancy — it doesn’t matter where you live, or the color of your skin or what language you speak — these problems are the same everywhere in the world. My wife taught me that I don’t need to live a predetermined, traditional path. Together, we can chase dreams. So, using both of our skills and working together with my best friend, we started The Wellnus Company to chase our dream of bringing free healthcare to the US.
Charvee Buch – I am the proud daughter of South-Asian immigrants who taught me the value of education, hard work, and dedication to what you do. We moved to Australia from India when I was 11 months old, and till date, I tell my parents it was the best decision they made. I loved everything about growing up in Australia – a beautiful country with incredible people, food, culture, diversity, and most importantly – really good coffee. I studied Banking & Finance, with a minor in Economics in college, and a short while later landed a job at IBM Global Business Services. Being naturally driven and ambitious, I worked 18 hours a day in the corporate world, this in turn, helped me to quickly rise up the ranks at IBM. A few years later, I met the love of my life and best friend through distant family connections. However, with his occupation as a Doctor in the U.S. Air Force, I made the tough decision to put my career on the back-burner, as a military life meant deployments and moving frequently. Back then, not all corporations widely accepted work-from-home as they do these days. So, I learnt to adapt and ran my own small freelance photography business in South Korea. Now I dabble in Website Design, along with Co-Founding The Wellnus Co. After our beautiful daughter was born in South Korea, Vishaal and I knew this was the path we wanted to take together by combining our experiences and skills – bringing free healthcare to all. Not just for our daughters but for all families that need help but can’t because the current system too expensive and complicated. We are striving to create a new eco-system of healthcare where you and your families can have access to free and quality medical care, no matter where you live in the US.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are building a company that is invested in healthier living and sustainability. We truly feel that our company is a disrupter in the US healthcare market. However, our biggest challenge for this business is that our personal circumstances have hindered our ability to give this business our all. It all seems quite surreal as we reflect on it, but as we had launched our business, we had also just transitioned out of the military, supported extended hours for COVID efforts as a front-line worker, went through a miscarriage, moved cities, made our first down payment on a house, and then were lucky enough to have another pregnancy but with a complicated pregnancy journey. We overcame all these challenges like we have any other challenge in our lives – relying on each other and remembering that the foundation of our business and our life is our family. We are now the official wellness partners for South Asian New York Fashion Week 2022, community partners with Alo Yoga, All Birds, and Saje Wellness, and are in the process of hiring 5 practitioners to join The Wellnus Co. for 2023.
We’ve been impressed with The Wellnus Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
