Meet Chelsey Evans of My Explore With Me in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Evans.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chelsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Of course! Well, first off, I want to note that the story I will be sharing with you guys today is mainly about my passion for travel and fitness and how I have incorporated both of those in my day to day life. I would say my story and love for both travel and fitness really bloomed during my college years. Now, don’t get me wrong it really actually started at a young age (which I will talk more about later) but I think I started figuring out my passions in college and then was really pushed (in a good way) by my husband to pursue those passions of mine even more.

As far as traveling goes, I have always enjoyed traveling, but it wasn’t until college that I really got to go on adventures of my own, on my own time, and with my own friends. It felt so freeing and life-giving to be able to explore all this world has to offer. I would get an adrenaline rush every time a new adventure came around. Even just the talk of planning a trip would fill me with excitement. So, to say the least, I am a travel junkie… and maybe a little bit of an adrenaline junkie too lol.

Fitness has always been a part of my life. I played sports growing up as well as throughout high school. Again, it wasn’t until college though that, I really got to decide whether or not I would want to continue to keep sports and fitness as a part of my life. I’m sure you guessed it. Of course, I chose to keep fitness as a part of my weekly routine. I would go for runs along Sunset Cliffs, play intramural soccer, and did some ridiculous home workout videos. Fitness seemed to go along with traveling for me, too. All of my travels seemed to be centered around some kind of outdoors activity. Whether, that be hiking, backpacking, kayaking, you name it: fitness was included, which brings me to how I got to where I am today.

I currently run a travel and fitness blog. I talk about and share my experiences traveling to different destinations. There is a breakdown of different countries I have traveled to and includes what I recommend doing while in those destinations. At least, one post from each destination has a fitness related article. I also have a separate section on my blog that is just related to fitness. I discuss my personal journey with fitness and how my workouts have changed over the years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hmm, this is a difficult question. I would say it has been smooth in some ways and difficult in other ways. The reason I would say it has been a smooth road is because I love what I am doing. Travel and fitness are two things I am super passionate about, so incorporating them in my day to day life or my weekends is easy to do. It doesn’t feel like “work” to have to travel or workout. They are both fun and bring me joy.

What I have struggled with is the actual business aspect of what I do. I went to college to be a nurse, so in no way, shape, or form did nursing school teach us any business strategies. I have had to self teach how to make my own website from scratch, how to formulate an email list, how to create a logo, and how to continue to grow my blog and business. I have had to start from ground zero and teach myself everything. I have taken a few online courses here and there to help me understand and work through it all, but it has been a long process and can be very time-consuming. I wouldn’t trade out all the difficult times though. I have learned so much throughout it all and feel like I have a real understanding of how much work goes into building a business. Let me tell you it is not easy, but it is so worth it!

I think one of the other challenges/struggles I have faced as well is related to personal insecurities. Starting this platform has been a big leap of faith for me. There are times when I feel like I am being “judged” for what I do or questioned on why I am doing what I do. I think you really have to have a passion for what you are doing in order to push through those hard times. There are definitely days where I question if I want to continue what I have started, but then I am reminded that this is a dream of mine and I want to succeed at it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My platform is called My Explore With Me (both on Instagram and on the Internet). As stated before, my blog is known for travel and fitness. My goal is to share my passions with others. I hope to instill the same kind of joy I find in traveling to others. Currently, my main focus is about different kinds of adventures to take while out exploring the world. I do a lot of “city guides’ or “country guides.” For example, I write a lot of posts on “top things to do while in ____.” As for the fitness section of my business, I share with others what kind of workouts I do, healthy living tips, and my journey through living a dairy-free lifestyle. My fitness journey is a little different than what most would expect. I am a small 5’3″ around 100lb girl who is working to add more muscle to my body. In a few of my posts, I give a breakdown of my workouts, how I eat to gain muscle, and I even share some progress pictures from my journey. For now, I have separate travel and fitness sections on my page. However, I am currently working on how to incorporate the two together more.

I am still working on growing my business as it is only one year old. I am working to grow my email list so that I can create and share insider travel tips. I am currently working on creating detailed city travel guides, fitness e-books, and special offers for my favorite travel products. I have set out to make my love of traveling and fitness something that could be also supplemented by companies who want to collaborate with me in exchange for marketing for their businesses. I would say I am most proud of the fact that in under 8 months I have received my first all-expense paid international trip (Belize).

What were you like growing up?
I am a San Diego girl born and raised, so obviously, I grew up basking in the San Diego sun all the time. I would go to the beach practically every day during the summers. I was always an active girl at a very young age. I played softball and soccer as a kid and then when I got to high school I kind of did all the sports. I played tennis, soccer, softball, and ran cross country, but my true love was soccer. So, as you can see, I grew up living a pretty active lifestyle. Fitness has been instilled in me since a very young age. I would say I received my passion for traveling through my parents. My mom and dad both loved and still travel quite often. They love finding a good deal and making the best trip out of it! Growing up, we were always off on a new adventure. We would do a lot of camping both on the beach and in the mountains. It wasn’t until I reached high school that we began doing some international travel, but all throughout my childhood, I was blessed and got to travel a lot throughout the US.

I would say I was a pretty quiet kid growing up. I loved being busy all the time, but I was not the talkative one in the crowd. I think some people saw me as a social butterfly in high school because I partook in so many activities, but deep down inside I was really actually introverted and still am an introvert today. I loved having my outdoor activities, but I would really re-gain my energy from staying home and scrapbooking with my mom or playing the piano, or practicing photography.

I went to nursing school at Point Loma Nazarene University and have been working as a nurse in San Francisco, CA for the past four years. I just recently moved back to San Diego in March of this year and it feels so good to be home again. I love this city and I can’t wait to be able to share all my travel tips and fitness tips with everyone!
