Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Ehlers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I believe in the power of mentoring and the good that comes from just “one” special person in your life that believes in your capabilities, something, sometimes no other person sees. I had one such mentor when I was in high school, my art teacher, Mrs. Moncla. She not only provided me the encouragement and drive to take that step into the “unknown and reach for the stars”, but to be the best I could be. She gave me the confidence to move forward.
That was in 1971, and in 1997, I had a dream to bestow an honor upon her. But how? She had given me so much. That dream became a reality in January 2007, when I started The Stardust Arts and it expanded countywide in May of 2009, with the support of the Kenneth A. Foundation and many others. Since then The Stardust Arts has served over 11,600 students and has been recognized by the California State Assembly and the San Diego Board of Supervisors, for its contributions to youth.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a wonderful road to travel, but it does have some hiccups., now and then. The task of constantly seeking financial assistance is a hurdle to jump over. I am seeking a non-profit, at this time, to be a financial sponsor, so I may move forward with additional grants to support the education of art to youth. Many have supported the program and I have not found any that do not agree, that is it exceptional.
Please tell us about The Stardust Arts.
The Stardust Arts is a youth art program. Like many programs out there for youth today, The Stardust Arts has surpassed all dreams by connecting with youth and opening up their creative side in a profession manner. Empowering youth to succeed and build confidence in themselves, is a key component in a well-rounded education. Parents and teachers alike have acknowledged their support and noticed changes in their children.
As a professional artist, myself. I apply my technical and creative knowledge through art I am an award winning and published artist, and am honored to be an arts advocate on many levels. I strive to always support the emerging artists. ” If you just believe you can do anything”.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Raised in Europe, as a child, art was always the one part of my life that did not have to fit into a suitcase while we traveled. Creativity and imagination is the key to happiness, and should always be explored. I still hold onto that today.
