Meet Chris Chase of Chase Design in Poway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Chase.

Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a graduate of San Diego State University where I received a BA degree in graphic design in 2001. After graduating, I established my own San Diego based design firm, Chase Design, Inc. As CEO and Creative Director of the company, I bring over 17 years of branding, graphic design, and web design and development.

We’ve worked with small and large startup firms as well as more established ones, building an impressive reputation for producing effective design, receiving several awards for excellence along the way, such as one of our biggest accolades – winning first place for the rebranded Palomar Health logo at the 2013 Health Care Communicator Awards.

Along with Palomar Health, some of our more prominent clients have included Callaway Golf, Ashworth Golf, The Los Angeles Triathlon, The Nation’s Triathlon, and Scripps Hospital.

Currently, a team of five creatives, we also collaborate with several contractors who encompass a wide range of design and programming skills to produce high level advertisements, catalogs, brochures, corporate identities, publication designs, product illustrations, 3D designs, motion graphics, and websites.

Chase Design, Inc.’s biggest accolade was in 2013 when Chase Design won first place for the rebranded Palomar Health logo at the Health Care Communicator Awards.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My design career began after the tragedy of 9-11 in New York – so it was a very tough start. At that time there were hardly any good jobs around, so I started Chase Design out of desperation. Since I wasn’t able to get a full-time job that would pay well, I started getting freelance jobs that would. And before I knew it, I had enough work to hire my first employee. That’s how Chase Design started!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Chase Design – what should we know?
At Chase Design, we create and evolve brands. Whether you are starting a new business and need a logo and website to connect with your customers or are an already established company that needs to evolve to the next level – we have the talent, skill set and experience to successfully collaborate with you to take your brand to new heights. We love what we do!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe you have to be great at what you do. We thrive on doing great work, giving our clients excellent customer service and hitting our deadlines.

I also think you need to have a system and process that works.

By definition, process means a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end. Our three-step design process for creating success for our clients is simple:

Listen. Plan. Execute.

Listen.

At the beginning of a potential collaboration, it’s very important to carefully listen to the client in order to add value to the consultation, manage expectations, determine the scope of the project and set proper timelines and milestones, all of which will eventually be documented in a “creative brief.”

Here are a few questions that we would typically ask in this part of the process:

Who is your target audience (how will we communicate with them)?
What are the client’s goals?
How do you want the user to feel?
What are the main calls of action?
What kind of timeline is involved (are there any critical dates)?

Plan.

Once the creative brief is created, it will be used as a general plan, to help guide and inform all principal stakeholders. During the “Plan” part of the creative process, Chase Design makes sure to properly set up the project (conveying to the client what content and assets are needed and efficiently organizing them once received), do adequate research and sufficiently brainstorm enough so that a definitive creative direction is determined before actual work is started.

Execute.

Utilizing our attention to detail, design expertise and project management skills, we “Execute” the plan. From first round compositions of a logo design, to the launching of a new website, we take great care in our craftsmanship. Not only do we artistically use our design skills to create something beautiful, but we analytically stay organized, making sure to review and confirm applicable specifications and maintain our high standards of quality control every step of the way.
