Meet Chris Coté of Coté Media Group in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Coté.

Chris is a multi-media action sports personality. As a youngster, he surfed professionally, albeit at low, low professional level (c grade at best). Chris worked in the surf industry as a team manager, marketing assistant, blah blah blah. In 1999 he aided in the start of TransWorld SURF Magazine and became Editor In Chief in 2005 or so. Along the way, he’s worked as a television host, commentator, DJ, roadie, and is now producing, writing, and consulting for various media entities and brands including FUEL TV, Vans, Red Bull, Volcom, World Surf League, Dew Tour, Grind TV, Yew Media and many more.

Currently, Chris is a Play-X-Play specialist for the Vans Park Series, as well as selected World Surf League events and Red Bull Skate and surf broadcasts.

He’s not as fat as you probably think he is. He still surfs and skateboards every day. He’s as blind as a bat, making his trademark chunky glasses-less of a fashion statement and more of a necessity. He knows surfing. He even writes his own bios. He’s awesome.

Chris Cote is a lifelong San Diego music lover and Belly Up Local as well as a multi-media action sports personality (including acting as Editor for Encinitas Magazine). He has performed in rock bands, including Kut U Up, Years Around The Sun, The Panthers, The Bees Knees and currently, plays in a one-man-dance-rock-comedy-performance-art act called, CBOT And The Paperwork as well as a solo artist. Chris also DJ’s all over the world, but mostly at The Belly Up under his own name and as well as 80s HEAT — yes, that 80s HEAT.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Ups and downs for sure. I quit drinking nearly four years ago, that made everything smoother and much easier to manage. Lots of failures, rejections and haters along the way. But also, a LOT of supportive, amazing, helpful people along the way making what I do possible.

Please tell us about Coté Media Group.
I started my company five years ago to be able to manage all the various types of media I offer. I do social media for four brands (including my own), I work as a broadcast host for multiple outlets including NBC, Red Bull TV, Vans and the World Surf League. I also do freelance copywriting for leading creative agencies, consulting, music coordination, live event hosting, event planning and a bunch of other hats that I take on and off on a daily basis.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Maybe would have stayed in school a bit longer.
