Meet Chris McClellan of JOYConnector

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris McClellan.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It was late summer 2013 and I found myself isolating more and more in my NYC apartment. I’d reached business highs in Boston, NYC, Chicago, Dallas, LA and San Francisco, lived childhood dreams of my own dance company in NYC…but my past was catching up with me and I couldn’t outrun the fear any longer. I ran on way too much coffee, too little sleep and as much mental stimulation as possible. I tried to keep my anxiety at bay with distraction activities and a busy social life but the truth was I feared crossing the street sometimes and being with so many people in the city. I was so disconnected from myself, the sensations of my body and what was really under the surface of my emotions, I didn’t know what was happening from moment to moment. I was a self-help junkie, pouring over every book and lecture that seemed like the next best thing. I wanted to stop the world and get off for a while…and with the guidance of a trusted practitioner, I booked a week in the desert and got myself some solid practice and a transformation toolkit of new daily actions.

I’d meditated before; I’d even gone on a weekend retreat here or there, but this time, I was ready to open up and try something completely different. I was ready to take responsibility for myself, let go of the past and walk forward in a new way one day at a time. One day, I walked into the desert, sat on a rock as instructed, tapped on my chest and listened. I heard the sounds of my own body. I felt the rush of blood under my skin and the pounding of my heart and I felt my worries melt as my breath steadied the racing thoughts of my mind…I felt at home, for once, in my own body. This began a daily practice – sometimes quickly, sometimes slow moments at a time – of meditation. Sometimes I would ask myself questions, sometimes I would listen to a guided meditation and let someone else ask the questions. Each time, I trusted what I heard in that stillness. Sometimes I would exercise or do yoga before meditation, other times I would drop in as I rolled out of bed. I tried crystals and essential oils, seated positions and lying down. Each day, breathing and listening to my own heart, my own body and connecting with my own spirit. That practice gave me peace, it gave me understanding of myself, and it gave me a safe place to be with all of who I am. That practice evolves still today. One day, I was describing a dance class I taught to a woman who was opening a new studio in a town nearby. She said that my class sounded incredible…and she called it a meditation class. She said if you’d like to teach meditation for me, you’re hired. And so my teaching career in meditation began, and it’s since spanned both coasts. I’m grateful to reside, teach and practice in beautiful Southern California, indoors, outdoors and virtually too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I was running from fear – overwhelmed by it – truly not realizing I was in control. Meditation brought me to an awareness of my own power: the power to manage my thoughts, balance my emotions and transform my experiences. Now that is a JOYFUL connection! I love to empower people to face their fears, live their dreams and more fully enjoy their lives one moment at a time.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Life has been a self-discovery and an unlearning process. I am grateful to begin recognizing how to get out of my own way to life’s natural flow. I was not taking full responsibility for myself; self-neglect was common. I put my needs last, outsourcing my security and happiness, and I didn’t realize how harsh I could be as a result. My connection to life, love and Nature is as far away as my own breath. I can trust myself and enjoy all of my life more every day with practice.
