Meet Christina Goodison of Goodison Acupuncture in Rancho Bernardo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Goodison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was pre-med and had some health issues myself that western medicine wasn’t helping. At that point, I looked at alternative medicine and ended up in an acupuncturist’s office. Within 3 months I’d never felt better, avoided a radiation treatment and got off all my medications. It was then that I decided to switch and go to school to do acupuncture. After a long and rigorous 5 year program, I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs and started working in an integrative clinic alongside MDs, DOs, nutritionists, and chiropractors.

During this time I was struggling to get pregnant and had undergone 1 year of western medical treatments for infertility (meds & IUIs) and still never was able to get pregnant. I eventually stopped all treatments and focused on myself, getting healthy, eating better and exercising. This is when I found CrossFit and started eating paleo. Within 3 months my fertility symptoms began to resolve and before the year was out I was pregnant naturally! It was a long 5-year process with all the emotional ups & downs but was able to have a healthy baby boy at age 41.

Once pregnant I decided that I wanted to work for myself rather than at the integrative center. So I moved down the street and opened my own practice. I work with everything from pain to digestive disorders to autoimmune disorders, but my passion in working with women and fertility. Because of what I went through I feel I have a better understanding of what my patients are dealing with emotionally and physically. I’m happy to report that I have a very high success rate of patients getting pregnant after working with me and I usually see them all the way through pregnancy and after they give birth as well.

At this point, I work part time so that I can be with my 3-year-old son more often. I also began teaching college courses online at Ashford University in their College of Complementary & Alternative Medicine this past year. I absolutely enjoy both treating patients and teaching students and find they both complement each other.

I am currently starting my own line of herbal remedies and essential oil blends that I will be selling in my clinic as well as on my website. I have an organic garden at home and even grow some of my own medicinal herbs. My passion is alternative health, in all forms from acupuncture to herbal remedies to essential oils to teaching others to help them be able to empower themselves and their own health.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! School was very overwhelming – there were 3 semesters a year with 2 weeks off in between. So 5 years of that was very challenging. About halfway through I had to take a semester off because the stress was so high and I ended up in the ER with kidney stones. Also, my 5-year struggle to get pregnant was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life. The emotional ups & downs are something that no one truly understands unless they’ve gone through it themselves.

Goodison Acupuncture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m definitely most proud of the women I’ve helped to become pregnant after trying other methods first. I’m proud of those that I supported through their IVF process as well. Acupuncturists don’t technically “specialize” but my passions lead me to women’s health and infertility. I also love working with pain. I am referred quite a bit of patient from Kaiser’s pain management center and I work with many athletes as well.

As a crossfitter, I exercise hard and lift heavy and understand the psychology of athletes as well as the mechanics of the body and how injuries occur. I’m most proud to be starting my own line of herbal and essential oil remedies. It’s been in the works for a year and I’m just about ready to release the line in my office and my website.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success for me is the satisfaction of helping others while maintaining balance in my own life. I went through a period of time where I was doing too much, giving too much and draining myself as a result. I had to take a step back and look at my life and where I was headed in order to assess where I wanted to end up.

It was then that I realized my priorities & the balance in my life were all out of order. I think the past 2 years I’ve really maintained balance in my life while still being able to help others and to me, that is a true success and an example I want to set for my son.
