Meet Christine Gonzalez of Skincare By Christine in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Gonzalez.

Christine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My creative juices were always flowing and I knew from a young age I’d be somewhere in the beauty industry. It was just a matter of playing the field, trying new things and putting myself out there to figure out exactly where I needed to be. Starting with make-up artistry first, I practically harassed the benefit cosmetic makeup counter to give me a shot. They did and I was there for about ten months learning the basics of artistry as well as learning how to sell myself and products. I then went on to network my way into the television industry. Word of mouth and networking was key back then without social media around. I did that for about two years and then felt as though I needed something more fulfilling (artistry wise). I was eager to get into the fashion world so my friend and I cold called and mailed all the designers showing at New York fashion week. Finally, we got the green light and soon we were headed to work our first fashion week. We had a great time, worked our butts off and learned a ton. But then something funny happened when I got back home. That was it for me. I had done everything I wanted to do within the makeup industry. I needed more. So, I took a step back and got a job at Sephora (the retail beauty authority). I thought I’d spend some time there until I figured out what my next move was. It was at Sephora where I discovered an interest and major curiosity for skincare. I was able to receive training from all major skincare brands and test all the products. I was eager to learn more and keep diving into this fascinating world of skincare. After lots of researching and interviewing different Esthetician schools, I finally found the one for me. I immediately enrolled and passed the exams. At last, I was a licensed Esthetician and even if I wanted to continue in makeup I’d have more credibility. Six months after getting licensed and job hunting I found a job at a pretty busy day spa and salon. The company paid for all my training and certifications through Dermalogica and Epicuren Discovery. It was there at Carlton where I was able to have tons of hands on practice. Lots of trial and error. 3 years later I realized that I had a solid clientele and I was a force to be reckoned with and decided it was time to go on independently. After finding the perfect place for me I jumped ship and started Skincare By Christine. A place I could bring my loyal clients and invite new ones. It was the best decision I could have ever made. Nothing is more fulfilling than calling my own shots, creating my own peaceful environment and holding myself accountable to anything and everything.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? No. That would have bored me half to death anyway. I found myself at a few dead ends along the way especially when I stepped out of the television and fashion industry. That feeling of being lost and not knowing what direction to take is so uncomfortable and frightening.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Skincare By Christine story. Tell us more about the business.
Skincare by Christine is such a special place. Not only do you get to learn everything about your skin and skincare in general, but you really get to unwind in an emotionally safe environment. I really do give a piece of myself to each and every client that comes in. It’s an honor for me to be able to spend an hour with someone and help them to see their true potential. Men and women, especially work so hard and go through so much. Why shouldn’t you take a time out for your skin? It’s the first thing people see and it plays such a role in your confidence and self-esteem. Another big thing is, I’ve been trained by a wide array of skincare and cosmetic lines so I can really give everyone a customized home care plan targeted towards specific skin types and conditions. I don’t limit myself or my clients to the one or two brands I sell.
