Meet Christopher Lynch of Everyday California in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Lynch.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christopher. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I was what you would call a water baby. My mom was one of the first ever female Navy Salvage divers and she had me in the water before I could even walk. I remember learning how to scuba dive at the bottom of our pool and driving from Modesto, where I grew up, over to Santa Cruz to learn how to surf, skipping school days to go to the lake and wake board. I’ve always loved the water and couldn’t imagine myself living without it.

When I got out of college, I started a job in finance and, shortly after the 2008 market crash, found myself working as a tour guide for La Jolla-based kayak shop, with a minor acting gig along the way. Shortly after, an opportunity came up to purchase a kayaking license to operate in La Jolla Shores, so my now-business partner Michael Samer and I got on-board and re-branded the company to Everyday California.

At first, Everyday California was just a few guys with a pick-up truck, a couple of kayaks, and a cell phone. We knew, however, that we wanted to create something much bigger—we wanted to build a lifestyle brand based around adventure and the spirit of California. We kicked things off with kayak tours and board rentals and started producing our first t-shirts and hats in 2012. We continued to expand our clothing line annually, and partnered with Cherokee Global Brands in 2015 to get our products to the international market. That same year, we were recognized on Inc. Magazine’s List of 5000 Fastest Growing company, moved into a bigger retail space and built out our apparel and adventure business.

Today, we have our incredible La Jolla Shores flagship store, which gets people more than 40,000 people out on the water annually, and a fast-growing eCommerce business. We love sharing the spirit of California and ocean adventures with people all over the world, not to mention to working on one of the best coastlines in the world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think that every entrepreneur goes through tough times, whether their business is a fledgling startup or a flourishing enterprise. Since our company is in such a seasonal business, we were always struggling in the winter during the first few years.

In fact, in the winter of 2012, our cash flow was so low that we almost couldn’t make payroll and really had to concentrate on every dollar coming in the door. We learned the hard way that we have to prepare for the bad times by capitalizing and saving during our best months. And, it also led us to extending our brand into apparel and accessories.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Everyday California – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Everyday California is a La Jolla-based adventure and apparel company. We are rooted in adventure and offer kayak tours and rentals — kayaks, surfboard, stand up paddleboards — on one of the best coastlines in the world. We also specialize in premium men’s, women’s and kids’ California-inspired apparel and accessories.

We are proud to offer one of the top ‘must-do’ activities in San Diego and of our awesome and knowledgeable staff. Our guests rave about the experience they get with Everyday California and continuously recommend us to their friends and family, so we’re doing something right. We also have a great retail store in the heart of La Jolla Shores and love sharing the spirit of California with people around the globe.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re looking forward to continuing building our apparel offering and creating new partnerships locally and nationally. For instance, we recently partnered with Resident Brewing and Social Syndicate to create an Everyday California IPA — it was delicious. We also have a great partnership with Cherokee Global Brands, which enables us to get our brand out internationally, and look forward to additional collaborations in the forthcoming years.
