Meet Christopher Peterson of Peterson and Abe in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Peterson.

Christopher, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in San Diego and love my community. When I met my wife just before college I told her I wanted to be a science fiction writer, which is pretty far from what I have become. When I started taking science classes at UCSD, I realized that my passion was definitely in the real world of science. I finished my degree in biology while assisting at my dad’s periodontal practice in Hillcrest and saw what a fascinating and innovative field dentistry could be. It may sound boring but it’s really an environment where new technology and procedures are rapidly improving how we can help people and how we can make their experience “at the dentist” so much more comfortable.

I went to Tufts Dental School in Boston and then did my residency in the south at the University of Alabama where I worked with hundreds of patients and learned my craft. At UAB I helped develop many novel techniques on bone grafting and soft tissue management.

Coming back to San Diego was never a question. I moved back to San Diego in 2014 with my wife and two small kids and started seeing patients at my fathers practice, which he started 30 years ago I eventually took over with my business partner Bruce Abe.

We are a referral based practice which means most of our patients are sent to us by either dentists or our patients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Really, the most challenging thing is following in the footsteps of a periodontist (my dad) who has been voted top periodontist in San Diego countless times. This has really been a blessing in some ways though because it forces me to keep up to date and on top of my game in all aspects of the practice. He taught me to be fair and caring for patients, to put a patient’s needs above all else, to be voracious in my education.

Now that I am in practice I know that it’s important to keep the momentum, never stop learning and improving. We are lucky to live in a city where people understand how important their health is and how interconnected all aspects of their health care. My job is to meet the needs of patients and to provide them with the optimal oral health.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a periodontal practice, which means we work on the overall health of the gums and bones beneath the teeth. We focus on partnering with San Diego’s most talented dentists to make sure that patients have the best team. This may mean getting a full mouth of implants or simply a really good deep cleaning to make sure the gums are healthy.

We are proud to put our patients’ comfort first. We realize that coming to the dentist is not always a fun experience and that we are asking for a person’s trust to do what we specialize in. We prioritize knowing and perfecting the most advanced and least invasive procedures to make sure that our patients leave with the best possible outcome. We work closely with a patient’s general dentist and also make sure that the patient understands all their options and is a part of the decision making process.

Our practice has been operating in San Diego for 30 years and we are proud to uphold the standard of excellence that my dad established and the community has come to expect from us.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a great place to own a business.
