Meet CJ Epstein of Team Elite Chiropractic in Scripps Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ Epstein.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In January 2014, I moved to San Diego for my final chiropractic internship with an amazing doctor, Dr. Jenn Reiner. During this time, I learned so much and while working with Dr. Reiner, my view of chiropractic care completely progressed. Dr. Reiner was going above and beyond what I had previously seen. She spent valuable time with her patients and incorporated soft tissue work and rehabilitation exercises into her treatments. I learned more in those three months than I had over the course of the past year.

I knew that I wanted to stay in San Diego and was looking for an opportunity to make it happen. Coincidentally, Dr. Reiner was looking to sell her practice. She approached me with the proposal of buying the practice and taking over the operations. I was 24 years old and hadn’t even graduated from chiropractic school yet. I was nervous beyond belief but I knew that it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. After discussing financing options, we came to an agreement and solidified the deal in August 2014. I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West and just half a year later was a business owner and over the past three years, have grown the practice to two more locations and am currently considering opening a fourth.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All in all things have gone well, but with any business there are always struggles. When I purchased the practice I also decided to rebrand and create an entirely new company, Team Elite Chiropractic. Along with the stress of purchasing a practice and being a new doctor, I now had the pressure of creating a new business from scratch. The entire process was so new to me and I struggled with the startup tasks of registering a DBA, setting up a website, opening bank accounts, and getting a business phone number. Once the business startup logistics were smoothed out, I found myself dealing with the struggles of being a business owner: hiring and firing, training new staff, payroll, marketing, billing, etc. The struggles never really end, but over time, and with the help of some incredible mentors, I learned how to overcome each obstacle and push forward.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Team Elite Chiropractic – what should we know?
Team Elite Chiropractic is the premier health and wellness center in San Diego. We specialize in sports injury rehabilitation and are dedicated to relieving our patient’s pain and discomfort to allow them to function at their highest potential. What sets us apart from the others is that we take our time with each patient to develop a proper treatment plan. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach including: chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and exercise rehabilitation to address the true cause of each problem and teach patients how to help correct things on their own.

Most people think solely of spinal adjustments when it comes to Chiropractic, but at Team Elite, we treat all muscoloskeletal injuries ranging anywhere from sprained ankles and tennis elbow to frozen shoulder and migraines. We are constantly learning and using new modalities, e.g., cupping, laser therapy, graston, kinesiology tape, etc. to help provide our patients with the industry leading therapeutic techniques to get them feeling better faster.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality or characteristic that is most important to my success is that I truly care for my patients. I take the time to properly assess their situation and provide them with the treatment plan that will get them healthy as fast as possible. It’s not uncommon in my profession for doctors to run high volume practices that see upwards of one hundred patients a day. That business model never resonated with me so I chose to do things differently. From professional athletes to weekend warriors, busy adults and children alike, we tailor the treatment plan to individual needs.

I have built a relationship with my patients that goes beyond the clinic by taking genuine interest in their lives. I work out with them at the gym and see them at events on the weekends. A large part of my success comes from the community of support and strength that we’ve been able to build over the past 3 years at Team Elite Chiropractic.
