Meet Cobi Hopkins of Stretch U

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cobi Hopkins.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started interning at Stretch U as a freshman at San Diego State University studying Kinesiology. I was just looking for somewhere to get my foot in the door and establish my career in the fitness industry. I was fortunate to come across Stretch U at the perfect time and have had the pleasure to grow alongside this amazing company. I now manage the Kearny Mesa location and have plans to help Stretch U expand across the country.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like any small startup business, we have certainly had our ups and downs throughout our journey and have learned a lot on the fly! One struggle we have encountered along the way was the high staff turnover rate due to most of our employees being college students who are in a period of transition within their lives. This became problematic since the longer a staff member worked with us, the higher quality of service they were able to provide. Plus, clients become very attached to our staff members as this is a very personal 1-on-1 setting. To combat this high turnover rate, we found ways to take even better care of our staff members though incentives, parties, and creating an environment that feels more like fun and less like work!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Stretch U story. Tell us more about the business.
At Stretch U, we have 3 comfy massage tables where we offer 1-on-1 assisted stretching. We offer 20, 40, and 60 minute sessions using a combination of two primary techniques called the “Carey Stretch” and the “Lock and Stretch.” Our 20-minute session includes the full body “Carey Stretch,” in which we stretch every major muscle in your body from head to toe using both PNF (Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) and passive stretching techniques. Our 40 and 60 minute sessions include both the “Carey Stretch” and the “Lock and Stretch,” a technique based on myofascial release where our goal is to improve blood circulation and break up the fascia surrounding the muscles.

We are known for helping people relieve pain and improve their overall health and performance.

I believe we are unique compared to most bodywork companies for 2 primary reasons:

1. We look to address the root cause of people’s issues rather than using the classic Western medicine “Band-Aid approach.”

2. We always address the full body and never just work on one area. The whole body and fascial lines function as one unit so it is imperative that we look at the entire chain when looking to improve function/reduce pain.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Since we opened in San Diego, we have seen numerous other stretching companies pop up along with Massage Envy now offering stretching services. So it is evident that we have begun to set a trend that I believe will explode within the next 5-10 years. More and more people are starting to realize that their body feels so much better after assisted stretching.
