Meet Constance Rawlins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Constance Rawlins.

Constance, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I approach life and art with a sense of mysticism and am interested in images that are not sharply defined but odd and ambiguous. I try to merge the place where painting and photography meet in a dreamlike composition. The impermanent beauty in an image speaks to me of loss and sadness as well as the celebration and humor of life.

I am comfortable with these contradictions and feel that we are all products of our culture and our past. These ghostly images have claimed me as their own– I want to ask, ” what is it about that lost world?” People’s relationship to the world is irrational and inconsistent, and we struggle to explain it through our art. If we are able to convey any of this we can produce art that can be termed “good”– and that would be very great indeed.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was growing up, we were very poor. It was just me & my Mom, but my mother believed in education & knew that was a key to all the obstacles a person could face in life.

Sometimes I feel as if I have spent a lifetime trying to deny who I am and yet there it is again & again in my art–I went to this place; she said these words; I held this object. I suppose in all art we say: This is who I am, this is important; pay attention and remember me: I was here.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
The most rewarding part of creating art is the act of creation itself: The moment when one releases the shutter of the camera or upon completion of a painting; & then to know that it is beautiful & meaningful. It is humbling & joyful when someone loves your work so much that they actually buy it or publish it!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am the most dogged person I know. I never give up!
