Meet Craig Benner of Benner Law Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Benner.

Craig, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I learned the benefits of hard work at a young age. I was born and raised in a small fishing town off the coast of Maine. My family comes from a long line of fisherman, and I began working on my Dad’s fishing vessel at age 10.

I continued fishing up and down the East Coast before making my way to Arizona for college. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Arizona State University. After graduation, I continued west to San Diego for law school.

During law school, I interned everywhere I could, trying to find my niche. I noticed two consistencies: 1) I wanted to help people, and 2) I wanted to be my own boss. After passing the bar, I took my first associate position at a boutique law firm representing Maritime, Longshore and Harbor Workers. It was there I found my niche. I was able to incorporate my common-sense, blue-collar work ethic, and background as a fisherman, fighting for injured overseas workers.

Fast forward a few years, and I realized most of my caseload was from client referrals. Desiring a more personal and focused legal practice, I decided to open up shop and founded Benner Law Firm.

Today, the majority of the Benner Law Firm’s clients come from recommendations of former clients. A referral is the highest compliment, and what drives me every day to continue providing the highest-level service for each of our clients.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are countless adages about the rewards from hard work. I’ve found that to be true. There were definitely struggles, and many lessons learned. Some lessons were easy, like learning the value of a case. Others were harder, like how to balance work with my two very young children.

At the end of the day, I’ve found tremendous value by learning from others who paved this road before me.

Please tell us about Benner Law Firm.
Benner Law Firm practices injury litigation; both the personal and business “injury.” We help clients with personal injury matters including motor vehicle/trucking accidents and slip and fall injuries or faulty products and in business disputes when injuries arise in a commercial sense from breaches of contract or unfair competition issues.

We are most known for our work involving the Defense Base Act (DBA) practice and representing those suffering injuries overseas or under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, as well as the workers here in San Diego building and maintaining the vessels in the local shipyards.

What sets us apart is the service. When people suffer an injury, they have a lot of questions about “what happens next.” The Benner Law Firm provides straightforward and specific direction to guide clients through the legal process so they make the best decisions, and most importantly, get the best results.

We are most proud of our referrals. It really is the highest compliment to have former clients refer their friends and family members to us. It means their experience was so positive, they trust us to handle legal matters for their loved ones or contacts as well.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In law, the lessons learned from legal education and prior cases is invaluable and propels the success of an astute attorney, and is built (somewhat) into the profession.

However, the lessons learned from starting and running a business are from self-education and trial-by-fire; there are no law classes on these topics. However, the process of creating a successful legal practice has taught me so much about how to help clients in their own business disputes and issues.

Though the lessons can be harsh, I can honestly say I have no regrets about learning them while trying to get a startup practice off the ground because these lessons have only made me a better attorney and individual.
