Meet Crystal Carr of Crystella Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Carr.

Crystal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love of photography began when I was Photo Editor on my high school yearbook team. I had so much fun during my high school senior portrait session, that I went to work for the photographer who had taken them the summer following graduation. In college, I got my B.F.A. in Fine Art Photography at Cal State Long Beach. I continued to grow my skills after college while working jobs ranging from assisting various wedding and portrait photographers; working at a one-hour photo lab; to selling wide format printers to professional photographers. I was Studio Manager and Photographer to a local boudoir studio before my husband and I decided to start our family. I launched my own business, Crystella Photography, in 2012. I love photography for so many reasons and the top of the list is it helps me to connect with people.

Has it been a smooth road?
I launched my photography biz the year I had my second child. My kids are only eighteen months apart, so I was taking care of two babies PLUS building a new small business. For a long time, I could only complete focused work when they were sleeping. It was a challenge, so I was careful not to overload myself with work. My passion for photography fueled me the rest of the way. My youngest just started Kindergarten and I’m looking forward to working during “normal” business hours!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Crystella Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My goal is to capture my clients being themselves while accentuating their unique light and love. I’m passionate about portrait photography because it allows me to carefully and beautifully document moments in my clients’ lives that they want to remember. Unforgettable occasions and emotions such as the bliss of being engaged, the joy of their wedding day, the excitement of a baby on the way, the many ways their children change and grow each year, or the delight in celebrating a 50th anniversary. I love portraiture because whether I’m photographing an individual, a couple, a family, or any other frame with people, there is depth, light, and especially love to be found and captured. I think my search for that sets me apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love San Diego so much! There are so many fun activities to do here; especially as a family! I love taking my kids to the museums at Balboa Park, the beach, amusement parks, sporting events, and overall just exposing them to new people, places, and foods!! I grew up in a small town with a population of 30k.

When I moved to here 12 years ago, I was overwhelmed by the size of the city. Fortunately, San Diegans are down to earth and friendly. San Diego is a big city with a small town feel. The longer I live here and the more friends I make; the more it feels like the small town I grew up in :).
