Meet Danielle Dietz-LiVolsi of NuttZo in Del Mar and Carmel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Dietz-LiVolsi.

Danielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The inception of NuttZo began in April 2002 when I met our first son, Gregory (then 3-1⁄2 years old), who we adopted and was extremely vitamin deficient. Greg was a very picky eater who did not like any sort of texture or food that required chewing like animal protein. This was a result of the diet he had grown up with – mostly porridges and watery soups. I’ve always been passionate about nutrition, so I came up with an idea for a vegan source of protein for Greg.

I blended seven different nuts and seeds to make a yummy, vitamin and mineral-rich complete protein with Omega 3 ALAs. Voila, NuttZo nut butter was born! With the launch of NuttZo in 2008, my husband and I founded a nonprofit, Project Left Behind (PLB). NuttZo is a proud supporter of PLB, which benefits orphaned and neglected children in Nepal, India and Peru. I visit every children’s home PLB supports. PLB is the heart of NuttZo. Each jar of NuttZo purchased helps orphaned and neglected children.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Early on it was a constant grind to find enough hours in the day to wear every hat in my company. I bootstrapped the company from the beginning with no employees for the first 5 years. That meant I was CFO, director of sales, VP of marketing, CEO, customer service, demo specialist, and a production manager. The learning curve was huge and the hours were long. Building strong relationships with vendors and friends in the business helped ease my learning curve.

Today’s struggles are keeping a strong open communication with consumers, balancing cash flow, maneuvering production delays, sourcing nuts/seeds, managing employees, continuing innovation, negotiating contracts, focusing on sales goals, and being prepared for board meetings.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with NuttZo – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
What differentiates NuttZo from any other nut butter brand on the market?

We were the first. We were the first nut butter brand to blend multiple nuts and seeds- creating a powerhouse of superfood nutrition. Nuts and seeds have a host of nutritional benefits – vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, plant protein… and today’s consumers know this and are reaching for more nut and seed based products.

We have a reputation. Consumers know NuttZo as a brand that uses the highest quality ingredients and never uses unhealthy fillers like sugar, oils, natural flavorings, or preservatives. NuttZo is ‘premium’ and super healthy in the consumer’s mind. It’s also viewed as a trailblazer, disruptor, innovator. Our jars are upside down for crying out loud! We’re not just another nut butter, that’s for sure.

We have a cult following. By our core consumers, NuttZo is definitely not viewed as ‘just another nut butter’. NuttZo is a brand that meets their high standards for eating and living. Consumers view NuttZo as a daily fuel for their work-outs, busy lives and active lifestyles. Our consumers are successful business people, world-class athletes (entire baseball and football teams, Olympians, triathletes!), ultra-hikers and runners, bodybuilders, cross-fitters, adventurers, and nutritionally-savvy millennials, of course!

And they all say the same thing- a spoonful of NuttZo is their favorite go-to snack – every day! They’re adding it to their smoothies, and spreading it on toast, banana slices, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and ice cream etc. The awesome thing about NuttZo is you can eat it alone (it’s a complete protein) or as a compliment to just about anything!

We give back. For real. At the heart of NuttZo is our non-profit, Project Left Behind. NuttZo is the primary financial source for multiple children’s homes and we plan to expand and grow our efforts as WE grow. NuttZo is currently providing food, education, and medical support to orphaned and neglected children in Nepal, Peru and India. My team and I take a group of people to Peru every year to volunteer! This is a huge priority to the company and an integral part of our company culture and mission.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
