Meet Danielle Perkins of Danielle Interior Design & Decor in East San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Perkins.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating at the worst possible time in 2008 with my bachelor’s degree in interior design, designers were being laid off and jobs were scarce. Which left me looking in all directions for a job somewhat related to my field. I landed at Tower Glass, a glass and glazing subcontractor, as an estimator. Reading plans every day and working with large commercial contractors throughout San Diego gave me a great taste of the construction industry and being on the other side of executing an architect’s curtainwall design. Executing a design is what my contractors do graciously for me when I am designing a space and they truly make it become a reality. While at Tower Glass the wonderful owners, Barry and Evelyn Swaim, knew I had graduated with a degree in interior design and put me to the test designing their personal home. Barry, being in construction, understood that I was fresh out of school and took me under his wing when it came to the nitty-gritty in construction that can only can be learned with experience. Evelyn and I worked on selecting the perfect finishes for their home and taught me about the relationship that is built while working together on such a special place. Since that very first design meeting, I have continued to and currently work on the projects Barry and Evelyn throw my direction. They have been a huge support to me and my growing interior design career. I could never thank them enough.

In 2013 I made the leap and started DANIELLE Interior Design & Decor. Now with a range of clientele, I have become intrigued with small spaces and maximizing the space, storage, & function a home needs but also adding style. Bringing on clients for single day “pick my brain” consultations, good-old decorating, or a complete home remodel all of these allowing them to get the most out of their space.

I continue to learn every day and am excited to see what the future holds for DANIELLE Interior Design & Decor. One day at a time….

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has been a ton of learning and it’s never ending. Things you don’t know, until you know…you know? With these experiences I have developed techniques and strategy for the designs to come. Things as simple as mixing patterns and adding texture to a space, but also remembering that wall tall ALWAYS needs a finished edge (i.e. quarter round, Schluter, or die into a wall or other material) Each and every job is different and comes with its own lessons. I love the challenge.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Danielle Interior Design & Decor – what should we know?
“Maximizing the space you live in” is my tag line. Really putting thought into how you live, how you function, what would make life a little easier? I meet with clients and help them design storage solutions, small spaces, or complete kitchens… really wherever help is needed.

When you come through your door, where do you put all your junk down? I want to make simple tasks like that not only functional but stylish.
