Today we’d like to introduce you to Dara Green.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came out to California as a nanny in 1998 from NY. I worked hard at obtaining my BA to include my Early Childhood Education units so that I could teach and nanny at the same time, while finishing my education.
Within the span of 6 years of arriving to San Diego, I had a few unique opportunities to work for some of San Diego’s most influential families while working at two different preschools. I was always asked by parents if I could babysit, pick up date nights, travel and overnight weekends at their house. I happily took advantage of the offers as it was good money and the work between both nannying and teaching brought a sense of balance to my weekly routine.
I was always in an environment with kids; birthday parties, after school events, playing on a playground, driving to and from activities, you name it. And while I loved it immensely, I always knew that I was going to do something else involved in my industry, just in a different way. The thought about opening a nanny agency didn’t seem too far-fetched. I never even thought about being successful, I never thought of it as a “business”. I just thought of it as an exciting new adventure, a new chapter in my life, a challenge.
So, I googled, read, researched excessively and in 2004 I opened Seaside Nannies. For the first two years of opening my business, I worked 45 hours a week taking care of a newborn in Rancho Santa Fe. In 2006, I secured the placement a private chef in a large estate in La Jolla, which I took as a sign for me to say goodbye to the family I had been with for 2 years and work for myself full time.
Over the years, as the business has grown, we have become part of the community. We serve a variety of household staffing needs throughout Southern California such as housekeepers, overnight infant specialists, house managers, domestic couples, private chefs, and personal assistants.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. It has not been a smooth road (chuckle)!
Most issues working in my industry are usually due to communication. Working with people is not an exact science and knowing how to navigate through personalities while balancing expectations can be challenging. As each issue arises, there always needs to be a protocol for damage control depending on the circumstances. However, struggles and mistakes should be used to an entrepreneur’s advantage and obstacles, setbacks and disappointments are all very helpful in becoming successful in the long run. If you do not make mistakes along the way, how will you ever learn and grow?
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Seaside Staffing – what should we know?
Seaside Staffing Co. is a Domestic Staffing Agency, responsible for placing professional nannies, housekeepers, chefs, house managers, personal assistants and domestic couples in private households.
We are held in high regard by our community for our hands-on approach to old fashioned match making with face to face interviews and cutting-edge knowledge about the latest and greatest in our industry. We knowing that both our clients and candidates’ expectations will be met by using our services.

We do not have set hours as our services could be needed any time of the day. We meticulously recruit candidates with talent and experience in which our clients are looking for. We listen to what people need and want and do not waste anyone’s time in the process. All nannies and other domestic staff in which work with children are all fingerprinted through the state prior to meeting with any of our clients. We also help with salary and package negotiation.

“Surround yourself with people whom have higher water levels than you.” That was the quote I constantly said to myself going through college. There have been so many people who have helped make it happen, as I have had the wonderful opportunity to connect with so many people over the course of the last 20 years of living in San Diego.
I believe there are people you meet in life on purpose because they play some key role in your growth. My biggest influence for starting my own business was a soap maker. It resonated with me that he could wake up with a determination and passion for what he did every day and be happy.
The people who played significant roles in the success of this company’s beginnings are the families in whom I personally nannied for that have become my best friends. Without their love, support, confidence and guidance, Seaside may still be a dream.
However, the real success of Seaside Staffing Company should be given to the families who have used the company’s services and their kind referrals to others. But most of the credit should be given to the candidates that represent Seaside in the field. It is the professionals in the service industry that I am so lucky to have worked with that have helped this company to flourish into a trusted resource for in home domestic staffing in Southern California.
