Meet Darsha and Joel Aldous

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darsha and Joel Aldous.

Darsha and Joel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Aldous Photo was birthed out of a love for fun, for creativity, and especially a love for people. Joel and I both began growing our photography skills through the sports we were involved in, surfing for me and skating for Joel. Trying to make it in action sports and having a high-quality photo and video content very much went hand in hand for us.

Flash forward several years, a couple of college degrees, one national surfing title, and one professional skateboard model, we’ve retired from action sports (jk, kinda) and we’ve found ourselves full time in the wedding industry.

Today, our business aims to give couples authentic, emotion-filled, bright and joyful images while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and type-A-ness hidden underneath our eccentric and fun-loving personalities and run-on sentences.

Joel and I absolutely love getting to work side by side every day. Marriage was the best decision of our lives, and we do not take it lightly when we get the honor of playing a part in someone else’s beautiful wedding day.

Has it been a smooth road?
While working with your spouse is a massive joy, it definitely comes with some kinks to work out, especially in terms of workflow and creative vision.

There have been many heated debates about the correct way to backup files or edit a sunset photo, what to post next on insta, what lens to purchase, and all the other fun details of running a creative yet detail-oriented business.

The pros by far outweigh the cons in this area though, and we feel unbelievably blessed that these little things have been our “struggles.”

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
There is nothing more rewarding for us than replacing the lie that you aren’t photogenic, by the proof of seeing yourself in our photos. Our style is timeless. We are providing our couples with images that will be enjoyed for the rest of their lives. We don’t want your photos looking out of date when the next trend hits.

Because of this, our photos are not hyper-edited. They are instead, bright, natural, fun, and fair-trade (just kidding, but really). This is what we specialize in, true to life photos in both emotion and color. Our photos do not blend in with the mix of Instagram or VSCO filters you see flooding Pinterest, and this is one of the things we are most proud of.

The other thing that separates us is that we’re married. We get each other, and we work incredibly well together (we’ve gotten the workflow kinks smoothed out). Thus, you aren’t hiring a photographer that will then have to hire their own, sometimes random, second shooter. We promise you we will make you laugh and act natural in front of a camera.

We shoot weddings for a living; we know the ins and outs of the industry. A lot more goes into wedding photography than most people think and the couples who decide to book us, trust us with this massive responsibility.

We believe that the decision to get married is so much more than just a pretty day; it’s the most selfless and sacrificial covenant you can enter. Thus, our prayer is that our images are printed and displayed as everyday reminders of this commitment.

Our heart for lasting, joyful marriages is huge, and anything we can do to serve others that are entering into this beautiful union is a privilege.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is the most AMAZING city! Seriously, San Diego is so unique in that you get all of the big city feel and activity while also maintaining breathing room, trees, and mom and pop shops. The amount of restaurants live music shows, and coffee shops is surreal.

San Diego is just the dreamiest place, and we are so thankful to call it home and so excited to continue seeing the rise of creatives in every field all around the city. We obviously also couldn’t skip mentioning how incredible the beaches, the waves, and the skate parks are.

Our least favorite, also obvious, is the cost of living. Hit us up if you’re trying to rent out a back house anytime soon.
