Meet Daryl Driscoll of Mt. Woodson Golf Club in Ramona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daryl Driscoll.

Daryl started his career working at Admiral Baker Navy Golf Course after graduating high school. He attended Mesa Junior College and played on their golf team. He decided to turn professional and work on becoming a member of the Professional Golfers Association of America. In 1989, he was elected to membership of the PGA and went on to work at Mission Trails Golf Course as the head professional. In his role as head professional, he had the opportunity to work with Tiger Woods and San Diego local, Phil Mickelson. Daryl oversaw Mission Trails, Tecolote Canyon, Chula Vista, National City, and Lomas Executive Golf Course for American Golf Corporation until 1994. In 1994 Daryl and his family relocated to the Las Vegas valley where he managed a resort golf course by the name of Wildhorse. In 1997, Daryl left American Golf to oversee the construction and operation of Rhodes Ranch Golf Club. While at Rhodes Ranch, Daryl gained knowledge of golf course construction and water feature construction.

Within a couple of years, Daryl transitioned into building water features on golf courses and at a Las Vegas Resort called the Venetian. Several years went by and Daryl decided to pursue his own contractor’s license for the state of Nevada. In 2001 Alliance Landscaping & Water Features construction company was established.

In the next 16 years, Alliance has built water features throughout the western portion of the United States. During the period when the golf business diminished, Alliance diversified and created a lining company to install industrial liners. Alliance also created a sign installation company, as well as a pool excavation company. Daryl never lost his passion to be involved in golf operations. In 2016, the opportunity came about to purchase Mt. Woodson Golf Club. Alliance purchased the golf course in February 2016, and has been operating and improving the golf course since that time.

Has it been a smooth road?
Alliance has experienced ups and downs in the construction industry. Construction is typically tied to home- development, and when the economy took a downturn in the late 2000s, the construction business suffered. Alliance, however, has been fortunate to be diversified, and has the skill set to perform many construction aspects. Since purchasing Mt. Woodson, Alliance has infused cashflow to improve and complete the new golf clubhouse. Alliance has improved the playing conditions, renovated the on-course restrooms, renovated multiple tee complexes, built an event area, and installed a warm-up facility/range. Alliance decided to install a grill, which was a difficult situation working with the county to receive approvals. Although there have been some challenges, for the most part the bumps are small and the going is smooth.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mt. Woodson Golf Club – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mt. Woodson is a golf course set in the mountainous areas of Ramona, CA, at the base of Mt. Woodson. It is a public golf course, and also has a restaurant, full bar, and event areas to host special events and tournaments. We pride ourselves on having exceptionally friendly and helpful staff and having the most beautiful scenery on all 18 holes of our course. Our course is a short course, but requires great accuracy, due to the abundance of greenery and canyons on the sides of many of the holes. There is also a unique 450′ wooden bridge between hole 2 and 3, reminiscent of Indiana Jones’s adventure.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is near and dear to Daryl, having grown up there. San Diego is a diverse community with so many activities, wonderful weather, and great residents. The challenge of working in San Diego is the regulations that abound in the state of California. The red tape and bureaucracy are very burdensome to do business.
