Meet David Estrin

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Estrin.

Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Videographer, Photographer, and Video Editor in Point Loma/Ocean Beach.

I have had a passion for watching movies ever since I was a little kid. This led to me taking an introduction to video production class at Point Loma high school, which sparked my passion for storytelling and led me down the route of pursuing Film Production at college.

The college film program was a place where I could constantly meet other filmmakers, and take on all types of different crew member roles, as I didn’t know which position I would like.

I started my Video Production and Photography company David Estrin Productions in 2017 when I graduated from the San Diego State Film Program. My business really began by helping friends and colleagues with their LinkedIn photos and graduation photos. I was able to use Facebook and Instagram to start promoting my work and continued to check back in with past clients to see if they knew anyone who might be interested in a similar service. Referrals and introductions were very helpful in connecting me with more startups, entrepreneurs, like-minded creatives, local businesses, and event planners. Connections from the SDSU Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, Associated Students, and the Greek Life community at SDSU were all helpful as I began my career in the video production and photography industry and started to grow my professional network.

Since graduating, I have been helping local businesses, event planners, educational institutions, and marketing directors with creative photo/video marketing content. I have also been photographing and filming a variety of live events, lifecycle events, company events, and narrative/documentary projects.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It took from 2017-2022 to get to the point of having consistent referrals, and consistent clients that would reach out to you with a new project.

The first few years out of college took a lot of perseverance, confidence, and putting myself in positions to learn.

By being a Production Assistant, working Movie Nights in the Park as an Audio/Visual Show Manager, and other roles I didn’t know even existed, I was able to continue learning what skillsets I liked to pursue and which jobs could let me follow my passions.

If you can build a fundamental network of clients and colleagues who do similar work, you will eventually have leads/referrals come your way. By expanding into multiple niches, I was able to fill my calendar and keep pursuing my goals of growing my video production/photography business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My business David Estrin Productions offers a variety of Videography, Photography, and Video Editing Services.

I’ve been editing videos in Adobe Premiere since 2013 all the way to today. I graduated from the San Diego State Film Program in 2017 and have been freelancing as a video editor/videographer/photographer since graduating. I’ve freelanced with video production companies and marketing agencies, grown my own video production company, captured events in the live event world, photographed music festivals, and worked in the corporate promotional video and content creation world. I’m a big fan of working with fellow creatives and collaborating on creative projects. No two days are the same in the creative world, and that excites me.

What makes you happy?
I enjoy constantly challenging myself to look at things differently.

By trying new things when I photograph people, every time I hold a camera something exciting happens. Whether it is the smile on someone’s face, the candid moment I then get to show someone, or just trying something creative, it brings a smile to my face.

I am most happy with music playing in the background and being in a scenic location like watching a sunset with friends. These are the moments I chase.
