Meet David Rykbos of Broaden in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Rykbos.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in Southern California, I found myself in the mecca of the action sports industry. From riding skateboards when I was barely able to walk to surfing down the coast with friends. At the time, this is just what we did growing up.

I quickly began to find my passion for creating and problem-solving. Unfortunately, when it was time for me to go to college I didn’t even last a year before I got distracted by questions like “why” or “what if”. So what does an 18-year-old kid do at this point?

That’s right, I joined the Navy. From 2010 to 2017 I traveled all over the world away from everything that was familiar to me. While I was serving active duty I decided to pursue my goals of starting my own business/businesses. Being familiar with surfboard ding repairs, I began to shape my own surfboards which eventually resulted into shaping boards for friends in the local military community.

As I began to build a bit of traction, I decided to learn a bit about web development and created my own website in order to start my own E-commerce business. This went well until once again I got distracted by the “what if” question. The big what if the question for me was, what if I can create a marketplace for small and larger sellers to publish and promote their products on my site. This is exactly what I did.

In 2016 I started an online social marketplace called and in 2017 while on deployment, I started a brand/community of military and first responder surfers called “Uniformed Surfers”.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? Definitely not. When starting or creating a business with no prior experience of course it is going to be challenging. I remember within the first few months of launching the first website I got hacked… twice. The frustration was definitely present. I took it as a learning experience, what to do and what not to do’s.

The only thing that really kept me motivated was the passion to learn and the drive to succeed as this still remains true. Without a passion for what you are doing, it can be very difficult to find the motivation to achieve anything.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Broaden story. Tell us more about the business.
Broaden, is what started out as a surfboard and apparel brand is continuing to evolve into an online shop for members and vendors to connect through posts and private messaging. As of right now, our shop is made up of the art, surf, skate, dive, and fishing communities with more to follow.

What sets Broaden apart (aside from the Veteran-owned factor) is that our marketplace is designed to promote and encourage small business growth. From Artists, Apparel Brands, and Surfboard shapers we do what we can to promote their products while also providing capabilities that help broaden potential opportunities within their chosen market.

Our Vendor dashboard allows our suppliers to manage their online stores such as syncing their storefront to maps, uploading products and posts, managing payouts, and much more. For larger businesses that want to be on the site but don’t have the time to build it, we will do the footwork for them.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?  Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
Like most small businesses, we have big dreams to keep growing. Our goal is to keep promoting local businesses within our lifestyle community to hopefully keep the American entrepreneurial dream alive. There are many great ideas and talented people out there, we just hope that we can provide a stable platform for growth.

As for the next 5-10 years, we hope to expand with physical retail and warehouse locations across the country.
