Meet Dawn Myers and Robin White of Guided Leadership Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Myers and Robin White.

Hi Dawn and Robin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started working together in 2019 and quickly found that we shared the same ambition for going beyond the tactical functions of business and HR to add true value to organizations. Guided Leadership Solutions was born out of the passion to assist small businesses in not only surviving but thriving.

Being a business owner previously, Robin found that the success of her company was mainly in the hands of her employees. She developed a game plan to empower her team, increase her bottom line, and reduce stress which she shares with our clients.

Before becoming a consultant, Dawn worked in the hotel industry. Since then, she’s worked with countless employers facing legal action because of a misalignment of culture and compliance. She devised easy-to-follow guidelines for our clients to achieve balance and stay out of trouble.

We understand that it can be lonely and overwhelming to own a business but add in California employment laws and it becomes daunting. In fact, according to the Small Business Administration, more than half of new employer businesses fail within the first five years. We are out to crush that percentage!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obstacles and hurdles abound in the early stages of a business. Overcoming our own mental barriers has been a significant challenge. Pricing, service offerings, and the ability to grow to the level required to create the impact we envision for small business owners in San Diego all trigger imposter syndrome. Scarcity mindset also has a way of creeping in as a result of no longer having our comfortable corporate pay and benefits. Fortunately, things ebb and flow at various times, so one of us is typically able to pull the other out of that space rather quickly.

We’ve been impressed with Guided Leadership Solutions, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We partner with small business owners to construct a success plan that reduces their risk of being exposed to California’s employment law landscape while also fostering a culture where employees may reach their full potential. We not only design the plan, but we also implement the systems and processes that make it work.

We recognize that success needs strategy, planning, and accountability. Our innovative mix of strategy, coaching, and HR expertise have been proven to save time, trouble, and money.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson gained is that starting messy is better than not starting at all. It’s tempting to keep adjusting something until it’s “just right,” but we’ve learned the most and grown the most by putting our work out there (even if it’s not perfect) and then fine-tuning it when we need it again. Everything we do is viewed as a learning opportunity. We attempt something, assess what worked and what didn’t, adjust, and then try again.

We’ve also discovered that business coaches need the services of other business coaches. While our responsibility with our clients is to take a step back and assist them to understand their business from a high level and what must be done to achieve their goals, we were having trouble seeing it in our own business. We were too emotionally invested and too deep in the weeds to recognize what measures needed to be taken next or where our priorities should be set. We hired a business coach for a few months to help us get started and then joined a group coaching program with other like-minded women entrepreneurs. Having a sounding board outside of the company has been critical to our success in keeping us focused on the most crucial aspects of our business.
